upgraded to windows 8.1 help needed transfering games etc

Hi all, once I have installed 8.1 is it just a case of copying program files from windows.old over to the new program files?

Chances are, You'll need to re install them as they'll have lost entries in the registry.

By all means give it a go though.

If you install 8.1 on top of your old install (eg W7) then all your programs and games will remain intact and installed. No fiddling necessary.

If you didn't then it's a different story. Steam is easy to migrate. Just copy the entire steam folder over to where you want it, then run the steam exe as admin and jobs a goodun (you'll still need to install the games as you play them, but the files won't have to be downloaded again. Other programs will have to be reinstalled I'm afraid. Some settings and game saves etc can be salvaged from the user folders (appdata, my docs etc) in windows.old, but you will most likely have to reinstall the prgs themselves.

I did just do the upgrade option but nothing worked after and I have just downloaded and installed everything again. All seems to be working perfectly now. Can I delete the windows.old folder? Cheers for the help everyone.
