Hi guys

A while ago (Feb this year) i built a new pc as my last one was getting a little old.

The specs are:

Phenom II 955 BE (125W)
Gigabyte GA-880GA-UD3H
Corsair XMS3 4GB PC3-12800C9 (2x2GB)
HD 5850 (MSI TwinFrozR II 1024MB)
Intel X25-M (80GB)
Cavier Green 1TB

All in a Fractal Design R3 powered by an Antec TruePower New 650W.

Two questions really:

Is this a good build for medium gaming for the next couple of years (it runs Portal 2 nicely at 1080p) and also, if some parts are a bit weak, what's the best upgrade path?

Any help is much appreciated

George

The upgrade path will depend very heavily on your motherboard.
Depending on its revision it may or may not be able to take the new Bulldozer AM3+ chips.
If it can't it will be less of an upgrade and more of a swap out.
The Rev 3.1 board can support AM3+ chips. The rest can't.

None of the revisions support CrossfireX either, only hybrid crossfire which is for lower end cards.

With an overclock on your 955BE (?? have you OC'd it?) the first bottleneck is most likely to be your 5850. Like I said above you won't be able to add a 2nd because of the limitations of your board.

So upgrade path - a board which can handle the new AM3+ CPU's and can handle proper Crossfire if you want to stay with AMD.

Thanks for the reply. The board is a rev 2.2 so no Bulldozer for me. Given I can't easily swap in a new CPU, are there any boards out there that will be good for Bulldozer? Or will there be new boards out when the CPUs are released?

There is only a handful at the moment. but more boards will become available whenever AMD decide to release the chips themselves. And I'm not sure even they know when that will be! :(
