He Everyone --

I'm looking to update my RIG a little bit, it's not a bad spec but I want to swap a few things out. It's also my impression that the MOBO is on its last legs, this was a Grade A or B board from OC that I did think had an underlying issue (but I never did anything about it so out of warranty as I've had it a couple of years now).

Current Spec
  • i9 7900X
  • Asus X299 TUF Mark 2
  • M.2. 1TB
  • 5 X SATA Drives
  • 1 X 1TB WD Black
  • 2 X HyperX FURY Black Series 8 GB 2133 MHz DDR4 CL14
  • 1 X EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 GAMING, 11GB
  • 2 X BenQ XL2430 ZOWIE 24 Inch 144 Hz e-Sports Monitor, 1 ms Response Time, Dark Grey
CPU and GFX cooled with EKWB pump/tank combo and two rads.

Here are my thoughts.

CPU I'm fine with - I mainly got this for the heavy lifting I do for work purposes but I do also Game on this PC. I've just DELID this CPU and reduced my temps dramatically as this CPU did run very hot.

The board IMO is on its way out, it takes ages to boot before it posts, I have removed a ram stick to see if it was dodgy ram and it still takes forever (10 / 15 seconds), I've seen similar posts to this board doing this online, not sure if it's designed this way or if it's a known fault. I've tried different versions of BIOS, no joy.

I kinda wanna go smaller form factor if not as compact as I can get for an ATX - the board as long as it's 2066, has the M.2. slots USB C would be nice but not fussed.

The ram is the only other upgrade I'm thinking, I'd like to go to 3200 MHZ as I know I'll squeeze a few more frames and its IMO the only place letting me down.

Can't say I'm that arsed for 4K (but maybe that's because I've not tried it yet) so I think I'm ok GFX and Monitor Wise but open to any advice and thoughts on this.

Hit me with some ideas and thoughts... :D

designed to handle 800-1000amps across vcore . New 10th gen x299 are £500-1000 cheaper then 9th gen version. will take a while to get into circulation but means in few ears time can pick one up second hand and with good cooling hit 5ghz across all cores .

Pretty decent. I was also looking at the MSI Creator X299 https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Creator-X299/Specification

A Beast of a board. just hope you don't have to rma as MSI and ASUS mobo are based in EU, Gigabyte is UK .

think Creator is 12x 90 amps = 1080 amps and Xtreme is 16x 70 amps = 1120amps . both Huge with power

Master is 12x 70 amps for 840amps

TBF - I don't even push it that hard, I just want a solid board that can take it when the time comes. My TUF Mark 2 is really grinding my gears at the moment. Turn it on and want it to be on, feel the force of the M.2. instead of delays.

Yeesh. I guess waiting a while and seeing what the MSI Board drops at price wise will be the way forward.

I am not impressed with my 28" 4k (cant see any improvement and if the scaling is bad then text etc is far too small). I personally prefer my 27" 1440 monitor.

Have you checked that voltages are correct?
Some of Asus X299 boards have had risk for automatic overvolting of things, which isn't good for endurance of for example CPU.

Until such a time that my card begins to degrade or can't hack what I'm playing then I don't see the need to upgrade personally. It's not that old (maybe 1 or 2 years old), and it's got a kick as its the FTW3.

For me I think it's just the RAM Speed upgrade and finding a decent Motherboard. Far too often have I been let down by the mobo.

I usually get gigabyte mobo's. generally they have been OK. However at the end of August I got a auros pro x570 in the steam voucher offer and have currently RMA'ed it as having network errors virtually everytime I turned the PC on (despite fresh windows install, and resetting, uninstalling drivers and reinstalling different drivers from a variety of sources, DNS flushing and other windows commands, different network cables and router ports, flashing lastest bios etc).

I suppose that all manufacturers may have some occasional bad cards? Desperately wanting a mobo back (my son just took my other gaming PC to uni and the wife doesn't like me using her new SFF ryzen 3600 that I built for her in August.

For me, 3450x1440 100Hz+ is perfection.Il It feels like an incredible upgrade, and is easier to drive than 4k.

As for mobos, I've usually gone Asus. I went MSI on my last board, and whilst it was very good, I ultimately returned to ASUS for my current build. Deeply impressed by my Formula.
