As I'm now using the 360 more I've decided to upgrade from my current 120GB Elite to the new slim model for the extra storage etc.

How easy is it to transfer the content from the old console to new, including any DLC?? I have a transfer kit that I used when I originally upgraded to the Elite but I've heard that does not work from Elite to Slim ???

Thanks

Jase

If I was in your shoes (and I had a good internet connection) I would do this:

1) Copy profiles/game saves to a USB stick
2) Retrieve my gamertag on my new 360
3) Re-download all my DLC for the games on the new 360*

*There may be a better way to do this.

Well, my xbox died over weekend with all my stuff on old drive.

Purchased new xbox and a data transfer kit, connected old drive using kit and it asked me if wanted to transfer - said yes, and all done.

Though I did need to recover my gamertag after this, even though it copied that info across.

Not sure who told you that the transfer doesn't work from Elite to Slim, but there talking rubbish. Done it twice now with no issues. Just use the transfer kit, no need for the disc now, and let it do its jobs.

Thanks, so is the data transfer kit the same as the original, or is there a new one for the Slim ?

Do you have to de-activate the old 360 for DLC to work on the new one or is that all done when you transfer ?

Thanks again

I just used a large memory stick to transfer my profile, saves and most of my DLC's

You'll still need to transfer your licenses online. I had problems when I was doing it for some reason but rang them and they did it for me within 3 days. They did recommended that I download any content again though just to make sure it all worked ok.

You can transfer your drm licences once per year using : http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/Support/LicenseMigration/Home

If for some reason it doesn't work just give them a ring :)

How do you transfer your licence online?

By using the serial numbers of the consoles?

That's right, using that link I posted.

As far as I'm aware you may not even need the old console in your possession/working. It will detect on that site that you have logged into live with 2 consoles and pick up the serial numbers. You just tell it which one you want to transfer to.

OK. if that's the case I might as well do a USB transfer of what I want and re-download the DLC - thus have a bit of a clean up at the same time. I may wait until next week now though as I don't want to mess anything up on my time off work :)

You may not have to do the online license transfer. I did when i got my first Slim, returned that as it was buggy, but i didn't do it for the replacement. Have had no issues at all with DRM and DLC. Just remember that the license transfer can only be done once per 12 months.

Yeah i had this happen, not sure why as i had recovered my Gamertag already. Wondering if its some sort of check confirming ownership.

The gamertag/profile won't copy (can't be in more than one place at once) but can be moved to external storage, you can even log in with it while it's stored on a USB stick for example. Don't forget that even without transferring your licenses you can still access all of your purchased content assuming you are signed into live. The advantage of transferring the licenses is the fact you can be offline (lets say your internet connection is down) and still access your content.

I think it can be a little hit or miss with a USB stick.
I've only done it once (from an arcade to a slim) and it corrupted all my save game data. :(
Because it seems to cut and paste as opposed to copy and paste I was unable to retrieve any of it.

I was probably just unlucky.

Well I have no will power so went out and bought the 360 Slim.

I started up the new 360 and recovered gamertag/profile. I then plugged in the old hard drive using the transfer kit USB cable (The old one worked), the 360 recognised the transfer cable and asked me what I wanted to transfer. I then transferred the licences via the PC from the drm link. No need for serial numbers, when you are logged on from the PC it then asks you to login from the new 360 console, it then transfers all the licences to that console and from the account management section you can see the download history and choose to download again anything from there - although the DLC had copied over with the transfer kit so I didn't have to.

Whole process took less that 30 minutes so quite happy now :)

I've done this exact same process just last week going from Elite to Slim and everything went smoothly but I have notice one problem.

My wife and I both use the same console and we've both bought different arcade games over Live, however games I've bought show up under my Wifes account as full games While most of the games my Wifes bought show up as trial version under my account.

On the Elite whatever games we bought we both got to use on the same console but since the slim it's all gone wrong and yes we did the DRM license transfer correctly.

When downloading games there is a license to:

The console- Anyone can play the game on that console.

The gamercard- The game can be played on any console using that gamercard.

As far as I'm aware though changing the DRM license should fix that. Try redownloading the game.

Thanks for that mate

See if i've got this right.

My Wife bought Kingdom of Keflings a while ago and it's one of many games showing up as trial on my account. So if she delete's and downloads it again I should be able to play the full version again under my account?
