Hey there,

Looking for info or advise re: the procedure to upgrade the main fuse in the house from 60 amp to 80 (preferably 100)..

An Electrician mentioned the energy supplier should do it free-of-charge?

Anybody had it done before? What's your experience.

There is a genuine requirement for more than 60, before that question arises :)

A lot of the time they don't like to stick more than an 80A fuse in these days.

Why a second electric shower, you'll get a much nicer shower off the DHW system.

I wouldn't worry about the freezers really, the running current isn't significant to cause a problem imho. Why do you need 6 freezers?

Ahh so the cryogenics business is taking off?

Yeah they should do it for free.

I've had it done a couple times now bloke just comes round checks fuses plugs new one in a stamps their seal on it.

Once you get to 20kW's they sometimes will try and push you towards a 3 phase supply. All depends on the exisitng network load etc.

Northern Power Grid state(Not sure which area you are in),

If you require an electricity supply more than 20kW, you will usually need to apply for a three phase new connection.

This is 86 amps so you should be okay for 80amps at single phase.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I've fired an email over to our supplier (Scottish).

I expect 80 will be adequate. Have been thinking and will most likely go for a water-cylinder heater fed shower rather than the electric shower.

6 freezers - 3 in the ice cream vans on the driveway and 3 in the garage for stock storage :) They only run 7pm - 7am though.

I looked at craft kilns for glass.. it's when you look at the power rating then it becomes a less trivial thing todo.

Hey, a 99 is not called a 99 because it costs 99p because we weren't using pence when the 99 term was created :p (Or something like that!)

My dad drives HGVs September to April as he's a workaholic and the staff find other jobs :)

The other guys I know that run ice-cream businesses either make enough to relax and do odd jobs here and there.

Thread update: Scottish replied about an hour after I sent the email and said we need to contact our local supplier (e-on). Will see what they say.

Completely off topic but...

From the Cadbury website: An Ice Cream served in a cone with a Flake 99 is the UK's favourite ice cream. In the days of the monarchy in Italy the King had an elite guard consisting of 99 soldiers. Subsequently anything really special or first class was known as "99". When Cadbury launched its small Flake for ice creams in 1930, the UK ice cream industry was dominated by ex-pat Italians. So, to appeal to Italians we called our superb Flake a "99".

Anyway... :p

Whats the betting Eon tell you to contact Scottish... ;)

Where are you in the country?

Its the DNO you need to contact, now as far as I know EON no longer have a DNO arm (they used to cover the ol east mids electricity board area), but the DNO arm got transfered to western power... still exactly the same teams, but they have been issued new overalls and the vans have been re sign written!

Your power distribution will do it for free. Also while they are at it get them to install a double pole isolator after the meter. I've done this on all my houses I've had. Should be free. Handy when changing consumer unit etc saves me pulling the main fuse...

In the North East, Northern Powergrid used to be CE Electric and before that they were NEDL and Northern Electric before that.

Just different companies buying them out, stripping the profit and selling on. Our energy services should really be back in public ownership.

Also YEDL prior to them :)
