I'm looking to upgrade from an amd athlon 64bit 3400 2.4ghz (geforce 6800 128mb) to a amd athlon x2 4800 2.4ghz - and maybe a geforce 7900 512mb gfx card with 2gb ram how much more performace do you think i will see and is it worth overclocking

u will definitely see much more perfomance if u upgrade but.. i'd rather you go for conroe now but mobo is expensive and if its out of ** budget then stick to x2 4800, its a good dual core cpu neway. im not much of a comp expert but u will defnitely see much better improvement.

Will be quite a nice improvement graphics card wise, processor wise much less so (in games anyway).

I assume your 3400+ is socket 939? Cos if it is socket 754 (most 3400+ are unless you got it OEM, in a prebuilt or refurb) you can't use a 939 or AM2 X2 in the board.

i am getting a whole new upgrade becuase i currently have an agp dfi LP board at the moment & the cpu i have now is skt 745

you will see a difference due to the "extra core"

not forgetting the jump from agp to pci...

The main differences will be:

a) better gfx for games due to gpu, you will be able to run most if not all current games at high resolution with max settings..
b) you will be able to multi task....yes not having to wait to ages to do more then 1 thing on ya pc..
c) video editing will be completed faster

however if using single core programs and games then it wont be much of a diff..

overall tho the difference will be noticeable

overclocking is only worth it if:

a) you know what your doing like know the basics etc
b) have lots of patient
c) like to run your components faster then what they are set to
d) you like getting more for your money

well yeh there is that....

however im not sure how they can tell if your cpu has been overclocked although im not suggesting now everyone start doing it....I guess it will only become void if you admit to it and fry the thing.....
