Hi everyone, first post here. Looking for advice on upgrading my pc.

Here are the specs that matter and that i'm looking to possibly upgrade.

XP pro
Motherboard: Asus P5N32-E SLI
Psu: Hiper psu 580w 4m580
Cpu: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.67
Ram: Elixir DDR2 1gb x2
GPU: EVGA 8800GTX 768mb

The cpu is watercooled with an ASETEK LGA775 with a 120MM RADIATOR

Right now i'm fairly happy with the set up. i get good framrates on Crysis and crysis warhead with everything crancked up. this goes for every game i play Including company of heroes, CIV 4 left 4 dead and a bunch of other FPS and RTS GAMES. ( though remember i'm on XP still)

Now though i am thinking of upgrading it to make it last til maybe xmas 2011 when i'll build something new.

Nothing too major. was thinking of increading the RAM to 4gb and maybe grab a new CPU. GPU wise i am very happy the 8800 GTX still works awesomely and has aged very well.

Now here is what i want advice wise. which memory modules out there are best for me. and CPU wise i was thinking of grabbing a Q6600 i know it's a good and popular CPU that's good for overclocking (never overclocked but looking to start learning) or am i better off sticking to my current CPU and just overclock that or as i am assuming an extra two cores is a lot better?

so take it away guys. also feel free to advise me on any other upgrades i ought to consider. Though remember monet is very tight. £150 absolute maximum. thanks.

I think that the upgrades you have suggested make the most sense ATM. However IIRC your motherboard is not the best one for overclocking a quad core so I would look for a Q6700.

If you have that cpu under water you should be able to get a pretty decent overclock on it and you should see some pretty decent gaines.

4GB of ram would be nice but you won't be able to use it all if you're using a 32bit OS. RAM prices are a bit steep at the mo so i would say have a go at overclocking your current cpu and keep an eye out for a RAM bargain.

Looking at that, i wouldnt really spend anything except another 2GB of RAM as 4GB makes the world of difference.

The only thing perhaps would be a new PSU as that can be used in your next build.

Something like that, modular, good quality and inexpensive and covers any future builds.

I agree with this, 4gb ram and a 64 bit OS is pretty much maxing out that platform unless you happen to chance upon a really cheap graphics updrade.
your current PSU is not great so it wont survive the transition, but it will cope with more ram.

I'd sell your current ram and cpu, you'd probably net around £70 for both, then buy a secondhand 4gig kit and a Q6600 on ebay, you should be able to do that well within budget and have enough left over to add the 64bit O.S too.

This very same question has been bugging me for a while now. I have a very similar setup to you. I have the same mobo and graphics card. Trouble with my setup is, I believe, the mobo is faulty and has screwed up my memory. I have tried just about every combo of memory in various slots and get errors and blue screens every time. I am currently using the only working combination of 1Gig of OCZ in one particular slot (I have changed the memory twice and it still does it). It is clogging up my system terribly. Short of a complete rebuild, my only option is a new system...
As it is still working (albeit slowly, it isn't hugely urgent to upgrade but it is really starting to annoy me.
