i am looking to update my 4870 on a limited budget no more than £100. My system is 4gb ram, 2.4 quad core IntelQ6600 running win 7 ultimate.

Looking to upgrade, not sure which is best and would hate to buy a NEW card only to find out my old one is actually better lol

Any suggestions ?? Thanks

For a little more than you asked but the HD6870 would be a safe bet http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-205-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1866

The HD4870 is actually a rather powerful card even by today standards is not that slow. If you have spare slots you can always be on the lookout for another used HD4870 or HD4890 or HD4870x2 and run them in crossfire as a cheap option to keep you going for a bit longer. I just got another one for £20 to go with my other two. Though i would warn you the fan noise and power usage are killer!

If you do go the crossfire way go for a card that is as fast or faster then the one you have and has the same or more memory then the one you have now. This is as when you run them in crossfire all the cards mirror the slowest cards performance. For example if you have a card with a 1000mhz GPU and 1gb of RAM and one with 750mhz GPU and 512mb of RAM then they will both run at 750mhz and use only 512mb of RAM
