Upgrading a 5 year old system for video rendering

Some 5 years ago I bought a system off OC (attached) and have been very pleased ever since - touching the proverbial wood. The only upgrade I have done is to install another SSD drive primarily for gaming. The machine still works really well for most applications I can throw at it.

I'm now in the market either for an total system upgrade or a new GPU although I suspect I will be more likely to go for the former. I've also got to the stage in life where I don't really keep up with hardware trends relying on others to suggest things based on their own experience.

Since retiring I mostly program applications (Visual Studio) for a business I own and also spend a long time rendering video footage I have shot with the occasional sedate gaming (e.g. FlightSim, no shoot 'em up) and general applications. I have worked in an IT related sphere casually since late 70s and know my way around most things.

It is the now the speed of video rendering (using Vegas Pro 15) that is slowing things down because Nvidia removed CUDA capability from its drivers. I have read that if I could use a later model NVIDIA card then would decrease timings dramatically by using the NVEC encoding capability which is not supported by the GTX580.

So before I talk to OC, a fundamental question has to be is it worthwhile my while installing just a new GPU (and if so what is recommended) in the existing hardware (assuming it is compatible) or would I be better off purchasing new. On basis of what I paid last time I am expecting a new system price of up to about £3K. If I go for new the old system I can use as a secondary system to provide network input to applications such as FlightSim so would not be wasted.

Others with more knowledge will be along shortly - I sense a Threadripper build in your future - but with regards to the graphics card, you could just plug in a new one and see how you get on and if it's still not good enough buy a new system and transfer the GPU.

new GPU could sort out video rendering , if not , rendering software off the CPU with ryzen should be great :D

or as suggested, wack in a mid tier GPU your old rig and do some series research into Thread ripper - although might be over killer and ryzen the better option for your work pc - along with GPU if needs be for video rendering - but again- guessing it depends on your software

Hey there,

RE: Vegas Rendering with GPU usage. I've had the 680,780,980 and now 1080 and none of these have been quicker at encoding than CPU only (4790k 4 core 8 threads 4.4GHz), so I'd take care not to unnecessarily invest too much in a card without ensuring it's compatibility and performance in rendering.

Thanks for the responses all. Seems a choice may be to buy a new GPU for the existing system anyway and then if makes no difference to video rendering look towards a new system. The Threadripper series looks interesting - all my years have always bought Intel solely because I tend to understand their naming conventions and can compare with previous versions (sad I know). I'll have a chat with OC to see what they can offer me. Thanks again - John
