Hi guys,

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro and it is seriously starting to struggle. I only really use it for photography so I don't want to splash out on a brand new one.

I note it is relatively easy to replace the standard hard drive with a solid state and then upgrade the RAM. Will this have a large impact on the ability of the laptop or will it be the CPU that is restricting its use?

I would be performing a full reformat to clear it out and believe the RAM is the thing that is currently limiting it, with everything taking an age to open.

Thanks

Changing the HDD to a SSD will make a huge difference. It's an excellent way to extend the life of your MBP.

You'll be limited to SATA-II performance (250MB/s) so there's no point spending the premium on a particularly expensive SDD.

You'll need a T6 and a Philips screwdriver from memory.

The thing about the EVOs is they're priced similarly to much lower performance SSDs, so to me it seems like a no-brainer.

Also something you can use in a newer computer later on...or what I tend to do, pop it in a USB 3.0 caddy for a very quick external drive.

I have a Mid-2009 MBP and upgraded to a Samsung EVO SSD and would definitely recommend it, also go for the 256gb I skimped out on the 128 and am constantly moving files between my External Hard Drive due to my large iTunes Library.
I would also upgrade your RAM if it's within budget, jumping from 2gb to 8gb made a massive difference for myself, with both upgrades I can't believe how much quicker boot times are.
