Having missed out on the amazing Cashback deals on the ML110 G7, I bought a ML110 G6 Server off ebay with a Xeon 2.4GHz Quad CPU installed and 3GB Ram.

I've read that the G6 can take standard DDR3 ram so upgrading that should be fine but I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience in upgrading the CPU's in the G6?

Stick with your G6, you can run 32GB RAM in it and its quieter.

Socket 1136 CPU's are the ones to get.

With the Xeon CPU's you can go up to X3480 (3.06GHz), but expensive and hard to get hold of 2nd hand.

i7 800 series desktop CPUs will work, 860 to 880, they are cheaper clock for clock, still have the same spec as the Xeons, the 880 being identical to the x3480.

If buying off ebay beware ES and QS versions, always ask for the S-SPEC.

Thanks for the reply. What's the difference between ES, QS and S Versions and how can I be sure of which one I'm buying?
