Hiya, I’ve recently wanted to upgrade my computer. Thinking of selling it all and starting from scratch. I currently have a i3 9100f and a b360 plus ASU’s tuf with 2666MHZ ddr4 ram. I have though about upgrading to a 11th gen in this build https://uk.************.com/list/ZrXT4d or swap out the processor and mobo for 12 gen comparability. However these come at a very big cost. As I’m using the h1 I need a mini itx and for 12 gen it costs around 250 and a i5 12400 is around 180. What do you think I should do. Also currently purchased the 3050 to pair with it.

The 11th gen was a bit of a joke when looking at the "upgrade" from 10th gen, whereas the 12 is probably a more future-fit CPU and has done well in terms of benchmarks.

You don't need DDR5 so get the DDR4 motherboard, which will be more in line with the B560 price.

well I was looking at mobos that look nice and are cheap around £150 for 12th gen which are mini itx but I can’t find any. And I’d suppose that a ddr5 mobo isn’t comparable with ddr4

Just grab a used 8700k / 8700 / 9700k / 9700 for sub £150 and call it a day, will be plenty for a 3050 and performance won't really be any different from a 12400F with that level of GPU.

An 8700k went a couple of days ago for £105 for instance and is a bargain at that price.

Isn’t a newer gen a lot better though?
11th gen is not much different in games, it can perform better, but at higher (often much higher) power cost. The difference between high-end 8th - 11th gen CPUs is consistently marginal when only 6 cores are used by the game.

12th gen is stronger, but like Joxeon says, it's cheaper to upgrade CPU (if you can find a good deal) and you won't notice the difference with a 3050. When a 8700K isn't enough for a game, the 12400 might well not be either.
