I have an Asus B450 plus gaming mobo with a Ryzen 5 3600X CPU. I'm looking at upgrading to a Ryzen 9 5900X. Would there be much difference in performance between the 9 and say, a 7 5800X? The 7 being a good bit cheaper.

What do you do with the PC? If you're gaming then you'd be better off with a 5800X3D, but if you're doing productivity work that uses all the cores effectively, then yes, there's a big difference between the 5900X and the 5800X.
Not much of a gamer so probably the 5900X then. Just checked on Amazon and the i7 is £349 and the i9 is £333. Asus's CPU support says the BIOS for the i9 is 2409, my current for my i5 is 3802. Will this allow the i9 to run or do I ned to flash the BIOS first?

Thanks for that. Yes the X3D is listed. However, the Ryzen 7 5700X is considerably cheaper so i think I may go with that. Not sure what cooler I have, would I need to check, or how would I check if it will be OK with the 7?

I'll have a closer look when I turn the PC off. I suppose I could try it without risk? Would it just throttle the CPU?
