I've had this awesome Overclockers system since 2012 (yes, it's that good !) and it still performs well, but I would like some advice on a couple of upgrades please (Graphics Card and SSD)

Original Spec:
  • Corsair Carbide 500R Midi Tower Case - Black
  • Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (upgraded to 16GB couple of years ago)
  • OCZ ZS Series 650W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply
  • Gigabyte Z68X-UD5 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
  • 119GB M4-CT128M4SSD2 ATA Device (SSD) - has operating system on it
  • 931GB Seagate ST31000524AS ATA Device (SATA)
  • HIS ATI Radeon HD 6970 IceQ Turbo 2048MB GDDR5 (upgraded to XFX R9 280X in 2014)

I mainly use my PC for music production (Ableton, Maschine, Pioneer Rekordbox DJ) and World of Warcraft

I would like a new graphics card that will bring me up to date, and I could reuse when I can afford a new system

I would also like to add an additional SSD for my music software etc, but I am not technical and I cannot figure out if my motherboard/connections etc would allow me to do that or if I would need to replace the HDD with the SDD and how I would go about doing all of this - this is what I would love some layman's advice on please.

cheers

would my two current drives use both of the available 6 GB/S SATA ports, so would the new SDD go into a 4GB/S one - sorry for the basic question, can't quiet get my head around the connection part, thanks bremen#

  • Intel Z68 Chipset
  • x4 DDR3
  • x3 PCI-E x16
  • x2 PCI-E x1
  • x2 PCI
  • x2 SATA 6GB/s
  • x4 SATA 3GB/s
  • x2 eSATA
  • x1 Gigabit LAN
  • x8 USB 3.0
  • x10 USB 2.0

To see which ports the existing drives are using you'll need to look inside the case. The motherboard's user manual will tell you which ports are 6Gb/s and which are 3Gb/s.

Ideally, you want the SSDs on the 6GB/s ports. If one of them is taken by the HDD it can be moved to a 3Gb/s port.

Even if you do end up with the SSD on a 3Gb/s port it'll still perform well.

Bremen, that’s fantastic advice; I’ll look at the insides this afternoon and see how I get on

Webzta, budget for the Graphics Card £400’ish max, only really play WoW, possibly Witcher etc

Thanks for help so far :))

RTX 2060 / Vega 64 at that price bracket? 1080p gaming?

My understanding is that if you're at 1080p the 2060 is the better choice but if above that then the extra vram from the vega 64 would be suitable.

Webzta, thank you very much, I'll have a look at those

Bremen, was able to look at the motherboard manual online and open my case up - looks as if the HDD had been attached to the 3 GB/S port since being built - I've switched it to the 6 GB/S, still going to look for a SSD to move stuff onto - thanks, you've given me the knowledge to understand what to do now ;))

thanks again for all the help; I've upgraded my GPU to a 2060 and installed a new Samsung 1TB SSD

the only thing I cannot figure out is :

my original SSD is the OS and labelled C - keeping as is

moving my program data from my original HDD (D) to my new SSD (S) - but I cannot rename the HDD so I can make the new SSD (D) so I don't have to worry about links not working - hope this makes sense ? Any help with this would be great

thanks again guys

/Nick
