Upgrading Computer

I made my computer a few years ago, and I am thinking about upgrading it at the moment. As long as it doesn't cost too much for a reasonable increase in performance. I have an Intel e6420 at 3.0GHz, 2GB GeiL Ram, and ASUS P5K Deluxe and an ATi 5750.
I am prepared to spend around 300-400 pounds (I already have a tuniq tower so i don't need a cpu cooler really).
I was thinking about getting an i5 2500k and then an Asus P8P67 mobo with 4gb of Geil ram.

I play games quite a bit (but mostly games which won't require an upgrade), but I also use Solidworks for my university course.

My most important question is if an upgrade isn't essential, is it worth waiting a few months (anything expected to be coming in Q2 which is a big step up?)?

Thanks for any advice

sell your old kit and

this ram

this cpu

this mobo

and if you require it get a new gpu but think you could probs get some better ram if u want to spend a little more like this

That CPU won't allow your i5 2500K to be overclocked at all, therefore not much point going with the more expensive P67 motherboard?!

Why not get your hands on a second hand Q6600 G0 (£70-80), overclock it and 2GB more RAM.

If you wanted to go SB what you spec'd would be fine. Nothing expected to be released in Q2 except the Sandy Bridge i3 processors (dual core).

Yeah agree with the above... Drop in a cheap Q series quad core and overclock it, upgrade to 4GB ram (2 x 2GB is better for stable CPU overclocking), and upgrade the graphics card to something like an AMD 5850/6850 or Nvidia GTX 460 1GB.

.

Why cant the i5 2500k be overclocked at all?

I don't really see the point in spending too much on a new graphics card when i bought one around 8 months ago (i needed a cheapish replacement then). But I guess if i bought a new graphics card now then I could upgrade my mobo/cpu/ram in the summer.
