Hi ya fellas,

A friend of mine has asked me if he can upgrade his laptop cpu easily.

He's currently running a Core2Duo 1.6ghz cpu in his laptop, can he simply "buy" a more powerful Core2Duo cpu and just replace it (obviously replacing the thermal goop)??

I've done it on my own easily with a Dothan (1.6 - 2.0), but i wasn't sure if there's a mobile version of the Core2Duo cpu that he has to consider.

Cheers in advance

Steve

doesnt it depend on the mobo inside the lappy? the socket etc etc??

if the socket is the same as the new cpu then I don't see why not?? although I always assumed replacing cpu's in lappies was somewhat difficult??

perhaps someone more knowledgable could elborate?

Nah, replacing the cpu itself is easy within a laptop.

I wasn't sure if there was a "mobile" version of the Core2Duo that he has to consider or if the desktop version will fit no problem.

:D

if its socket 775 then I don't see why it should be a problem irrespective of the mobile version or not....

thanks

Anyone else had any experience in just swapping them over before i tell him to go buy one??

I think Intel done 2 versions socket 479 & 478 you will need to check that he gets the right one.

That was for P4's and centrino's.

Centrino's being socket 479 and P4's being Socket 478.

Cheers for the input though ;)

There are S479 ones but for the life of me i cant remember where i saw them.

Saw ione on ebay actually just then.

I guess its best to find out the stepping off the cpu then check on the Intel site to see what socket it is. Thats the best way I think of seeing that CPU to get in the future.

i was thinking of doing the same... t5500 to e6600 or something
