Hi guys,

Tomorrow I shall be upgrading my rig from a 32bit Athlon to a A64 3200+ 939. I am replacing the motherboard and GFX card too, do i need to reinstall windows fresh following such a mjor hardware change or can I simply use the existing install?

If you're changing your motherboard and your Windows version came with the computer, Windows will ask you for a new product key in order to activate it.

Microsoft consider a change of motherboard to be a change of computer so when you turn it all on again Windows will ask you for the new key. This means you'll either have to buy a new version OR call up Microsoft and ask them for a new key. If you're lucky they'll just give you on on the spot - that's what they did with me anyway though apparently they're not supposed to do that.

However, if you bought your copy of Windows retail and have in on CD, you're OK :)

What components can I change in my system before I invalidate the OEM License?

There is a general consensus that the OEM license is paired with the motherboard. You can generally change any other component bar the case where the COA is attached. If you change a significant amount of hardware you may be asked to reactivate, but this doesn’t mean that you are necessarily unlicensed.

However, you can change the motherboard under a warranty claim if the motherboard was faulty. But, if you are simply upgrading for feature or performance enhancements, you would need a new OS license.

Yey! People are linking to my thread!

Legal issues aside, it''s better to start fresh as you'll have a lot better performace without all the existing driver srap etc.

You maybe able to change without a BOSD but don't bet on it.

If you change the motherboard you change the HAL so yes a re-install is advised, you can sometimes get away with it without it blue screening.
