Hi

ive just bought an 4870 to replace my dying 1950pro and i was just wondering what is the best way to install the new card.

Do i delete all my current gfx card drivers then install fresh new ones

or

do i just install my new card, and then download and install the new drivers over the old ones?

ive upgraded gfx cards before, but i cant remember what i did

thanks

What drivers have you currently got installed? If they are recent ones I would just slot the new card in, rather than pointlessly faf about with driver cleaning software that sometimes does more harm than good.

Id just go into Add/Remove and select the ATI Catalyst Install Manager, it will then ask what to remove, so just select the gfx drivers, then once done, switch off and swap cards, then boot to windows, cancel the Found New Hardware Wiz, then install latest/new drivers.

I would delete gfx drivers before instaling the new card tbh just to save any conflict all for the sake of a few moments work.
Just download the new drivers for for your new card from ati/amd site ( i always have them close to hand on the desk top ) uninstall old drivers reboot pc install new drivers and away you go .
the newest official drivers are 9.3
Enjoy:)

+1 though I tend to run driver cleaner pro after the uninstall, just incase any old files haven't been fully removed :)

I would unninstall...than delete all files...than delete all ATI regestries in "regedit"...
Than install latest driver

What is all this uninstall the drivers and then play Russian Roulette with driver cleaning malarky? He currently has 9.3 installed, pop in a newer ATI card, reboot, reboot again when it says new hardware detected, bish bash bosh the card is installed.

If anecdotal evidence is your bag, I have done this a few times with a 4870X2 and X1800XT when diagnosing a hardware issue on my own PC.

i did the same from my 1950 pro to the 4850 with no problems at all. no uninstalling and reinstalling.

Each to there own i spose but tbh if all the drivers are the same why are there different drivers for each model then, they may as well just have one driver for the lot

I add/remove in control panel, then run driver sweep and driver cleaner pro and then restart. Never had any problems. :)
