Has anyone any advice to offer in upgrading from the above?

I'm about to build an i7 rig, got everything but the graphics card sitting on my desk waiting to be put together. I held off from getting another graphics card as I was thinking of waiting for the new ones to come out. However a bit of me is thinking these new cards when they come out are going to cost a fortune so i'm thinking of maybe getting something nice now and upgrading again when the new ones have fallen in price a bit.

What i'd like to know is, if I do go for say a 275 or 4870x2 will I see a massive jump in performance over what I have, or am I best hanging on with what i've got?
All advice appreciated, especially from people who have actually gone this route.

A GTX275 would probably trade blows fairly well with 8800GT SLI, but be slower. But a 4870X2 would be a bit jump in performance.

What resolution you playing on? If its 1680 or below stick with the 8800GT SLi as they are more or less on par with a GTX 280/285 which are only better at 1920 and above with their 1GB of RAM.

Many thanks to both for the advice given

playing at 1920 x 1200 with a samsung 24inch. I've occasionally had to drop the res for reeally demanding games like crysis etc but on the whole as long as i'm not silly with the detail AA and AF it's been ok

wish there were some comparisons online but can't find any. OC has a pretty good one but doesn't seem to go back as far as the 8800GT

So you think worth waiting for now???

I would wait for the dx11 cards as you have said that the 8800GT's handle most things you throw at it.

This seems like the best idea. If its only odd games you need to drop down a res, theres really no point right now. Although if you insist, maybe a cheap 4890 to tie you over?!?!

many thanks, think i'll wait for now.

Does anyone know what dort of specs the new cards will have, how they will compare to the current offerings and when they might be out, I'd heard late this year for a few of the Nvidia's with major supplies coming early next year, but not really heard much re the ATI cards.
kinda thought there would be a 4890x2 but perhaps they're going straight to what I guess will be the 5xxx series.

any ideas???

november, wonder if their is a 50( pro) version as well as a 70s(XT) why couldn't they keep that naming thing :(

Even a 4890 isn't that much faster than 8800GT SLI unless you play at high res, you'd have to upgrade to a 4870X2 or 295GTX to see any major performance increase or play at 2048x or higher res...

I only upgraded from 8800GT SLI to 260GTX SLI as I changed to a 2048x monitor and needed the extra VRAM on a small number of games... even then I don't see a massive boost in performance in some cases.
