Upgrading from 2x 290's?

So,

I've currently got 2x 290's all water cooled in my loop - nice and dandy, except I find most of the time Crossfire hinders performance than gains anything (so most of the time I disable it).

I'm tempted to upgrade over Xmas, but not sure what to do? Not sure I fancy AMD again (definitely not crossfire), but not sure if it's worth upgrading yet or waiting? I'm mainly thinking of it due to GTA and some other AAA titles being out soon.

Any ideas (card-wise, or if it's even worth upgrading atm?), suggestions or otherwise?

Ideally I'd like to keep it under 400, and then I'll need to put a block on it too, so it adds up fast!

Cheers,

Matt

Id hold on for the time being, 290 xfire is still pretty decent and no current single card would be an upgrade. 2x 970 would be a sidegrade at best and x2 980's wouldn't offer a decent price/peformance ratio.

There's nothing really available that's worth it atm. Crossfire seems to be every bit as good as sli these days so that's probably not worth your time either. What games are you playing that crossfire is not working in?

I don't think that its worth replacing your setup right now. How long has it been since you crossfired if you don't mind me asking?

Personally I am still not sure whether I would be SLIing cards again in the future due to scaling issues and micro stuttering. I had that problem with Tropico 5 crashing constantly, I think there was no SLI profile for it. Also i remember when I was playing battlefield 3 the game experience didn't seem that smooth to me.

My point being that both crossfire and SLI come with their own limitations, best bet to wait for next fabrication technology node to get the performance you need with a single card. That would probably be a better investment than throwing your money right now.

Cheers for the replies all,

Been Crossfire'd for just over a year, got them pretty much when they had first came out.

As above, I will wait for now :).

Not looked at hardware for a while as I don't need anything at all, which is why I posted here as I figured you guys still keep up to date :]
