Had this current graphics card for 3 years now so i think its about time for an upgrade. I have pre ordered a BenQ FP241W 24" Widescreen HDMI/HDCP LCD HD Monitor and doubt the 6800 ultra will be able to run the latest games on this monitor at full resolution.

Got about £180 to spend and after reading a lot of the forums have decided on the following card:

OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

Can anyone please tell me if this is a worthy upgrade, and how much of a difference it will make, if any ?. Or perhaps recommend a different graphics card if u think it would be better.

Welcome to the forums, that is a very good card. Just to check though, you do have a PCI-E capable motherboard? I have to ask because obviously the 6800 ultra was available in PCI-E and AGP forms. :)

Sorry, should have mentioned but yes the 6800 ultra i currently use is pci-e.

Thanks for the welcomes as well guys, and advice so far.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but it really is like just over a week until G80 is out, id wait a week and then see what the prices are like in week or so's time. You've not got your benQ yet so tis worth it ;)

LOL dude just LOL

did you read the g80 thread? have you seen the price Gibbo mentioned? i guess you did not that is why you answered with such a post to this dude.the gto has a cracking price the g80 will cost 500 quid + vat

do you still think its worth waiting for the g80? :o

I went from a 6800GT to a 7900GTO, and it was a fantasitic upgrade, and a very good price. Very happy indeed.

As for G80, its big, hot and uses lots of power. Better to wait for G81, probably cost half the price, and use half the power, and still match or beat G80 in performance.

Roll on Geforce 8900GTO :)

The 7900GTO is a cracking card,

If of course you don't want to spend as much but still get a noticabloe performance jump then I would also reccomend the OCUK 7900GS 256mb avaiable for £115 inc vat or possibly in between the two the X1950pro @ around £140ish.

Thanks for all the advice guys, heard nothing but good things about this card so has now been ordered :) .

Surely the best thing to come out of all this *G80 nonsense/informed debate about this *waste of £500/amazing top of the range card , has been NVidia clearing the backlogs of 7 series cards with bargains like the GTO.

It looks like he was talking about wait until then because of the possability the 7900GTO will drop in price, not so the OP can buy a G80.

Yeah I know iv got 2 GTO's, but still trust me, it always happens, gibbos selling them so will say they wont drop in price ;) if you got a lot of money get G80 if not get x1900xt or the GTO's

Trouble is its been posted umpteen times that theres no price drops at all on Nvidia cards when G80 comes out, or ATi ones for that matter, its a faster DX9 card for £500+, why do they need to reduce prices of other DX9 cards, simple they don't, yes G80 is DX10, but it makes no difference as DX10 can not be used until its released in Feb when Vista comes out, so G80 is a DX9 card till then, and DX10 is not worth having for about another year yet, DX10 games will not all of a sudden come flooding out, and look totally diff to DX9 ones, be lucky to see 3 or 4 DX9 games with DX10 features by the end of 07 next year.

Thats no for certain, I can post that I saw jesus alive and kicking down the pub last night getting lashed, that doesn't make it true.

Even if ocuk don't reduce prices as a result of G80 being released, it doesn't doesn't mean that other retailers won't.

I don't believe anything about this shady subject until they are released, Gibbo has said similar things in the past and its turned out to be not quite true.

If its been said umpteen times before then those people who have said it should go and get a job at the inquierer.
