Hey guys

I have had a 980ti for 5 years now and am having trouble hitting over 60FPS on 1440p these days which isnt ideal as i have a 144hz ultrawide screen. So i figure it may be time to upgrade

Im really unsure what the best move is here as there have been so many cards over the last 5 years at all sorts of prices.

I was hoping to not spend too much more than £500 as the alternative is to just get the new xbox which seems to be able to offer 120hz at 1440p for £450.

Is there a decent option out there? or is it all too expensive still to get a decent performance bump

If you're not shy about the second hand market just get a 1080ti or 2070s for approx £300, you're talking a double in performance over 980ti. I wouldn't worry about the new cards until the new year, you'll be really well served by a 100% increase in performance (more so in DLSS games on a 2xxx series card). The most I reckon they're going to drop in value over the next 6 months is 25%/£75, maybe £100 max, but if that amount of drop puts you off then you really shouldn't be in the £500 gpu game anyway.

the 2070 seems to be 400 used? so similar to the 3070 pricing ?

They do go for less than £350, keep a look out.

The price of the 3070 will be that for the seconds that stock lasts, and if the other Ampere card are anything to go by you'll be essentially buying Nvidia's technical preview for the next, larger vram models. Also if the performance claims are based on anything like the 3080 was (no reason to believe otherwise) don't expect it to perform "at 2080ti" levels for anything but 4k DLSS with RTX enabled. In non-perfect case scenarios it'll likely perform at least good 10-15% less, around the 2070s level I'd guess.

thanks, ive found theres a 2070 super? do i want a regular version or is the super the same thing? thats a new tier since the regular or ti that were around last time i bought. Also is it a case of just grab any brand or model of 2070?

Not a great in it really. Some of the more 'premium' custom cards may have higher quality VRM components, but I don't know enough about individual cards to advise on that (I'm still rocking the 980Ti too!). Personally I always buy EVGA as their warranty is transferable, but that would depend how old the card is whether there is any left.

I'm going for a full system upgrade to Zen3, so also waiting to see what the new AMD GPUs are like before deciding what to upgrade to. I'd advising holding fire atm.

to be honest any new card i see having stock issues and also being more pricey than a used card, so im not sure waiting has that much advantage? i dont need the best i just want better and value

It's now based on post count of 1000 (I think) but older accounts do still have access as they were set up before the post limit rule came in.

I have access with my low post count and I see your account is also old so I thought you might too.

is it just located in the list of forums? If so then i cant see it unfortunately, shame as id much rather trust a member here than an auction site!

yeah theres a whole forum section near the bottom of the forum list. I can't see anything to explain the access rules so might be worth messaging a mod to clarify. Unless anyone else knows?

Edit found it:https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/help/boardUsage/

I didnt have trust activated but do now, so i guess ill find out within 24hr if thatll get me access or if i need o hold out for 1000 posts (a few more years!!)

So am i better off waiting and buying in november when everything is clearer? I am looking for powering 1440p UW at over 60hz as its a 144 screen as mentioned, so i want the best outcome to hit those figures from a value perspective as although i could just go out and buy a 3080, i dont see that as valuable given the time i spend playing games, but i also dont want to play the forever waiting game for the next possibly better GPU

Im not against waiting for a 3070 but im not paying markup on it and im not waiting months
