Upgrading from a 6600k , should I buy a used i7-6700k £145 or upgrade to 8600k + new MB ? For 4k

fairly happily running a 6600k OC 4.4, ssd , 3200mhz ram , Aurous extreme 1080ti.

But I am finding in some games that I am not getting steady frame rates at 4k , I have watched some benchmark videos on youtube and it appears a CPU upgrade would be a good option.

I am happy to consider either option , a 2nd user i7-6700k (not fused for i7-7600k unless cheap) or a new i5 8600k.

Also what would be a good reasonable priced z370 MB at around £80 - 120 price range ?

no card can handle 4k perfectly - that'll be next gen

7700k might help lower frame rate but at 4k your mostly GPU bound!

2nd hand 6700/7700k and push 4.8ghz

True, but it is for more consistent frame rates , based on the youtube videos it appears a older i7 or a newer i5 8600k would help me out in my price range budget wise...I know I won't be getting perfect 4k 60fps on all games , just looking for a improvement , If I went for the cheap i7 , it would be a cheap upgrade , but also equally happy to splash a bit more cash and go for a z370 + i5 8600k.

Is the issue on the CPU or GPU? I would confirm if the GPU is possibly holding back performance rather then the CPU and at 4k 60hz, I suspect its likely the GPU given the number of pixels, so would look at readouts of CPU and GPU usage over time (MSI AAB etc).

6700k / 7700k may help, but would be a side grade. I would look at overclocking that 6600k abit further initially.

It is more based on youtube benchmark videos , 8600k vs 6600k , which lead me to compare 6700k vs 8600k , you can see frame rate differences in the youtube video benchmarks .

Indeed, but as I say, I would check your own personal situation first. If your GPU is running flat out at 100% and is holding back performance and your CPU has capacity, then moving to a better CPU may result in a negligible difference. Right now I for example have a 8700k @ 5.2 GHz in my HPTC with a 1080Ti and performance at times is still poor on my 4k TV thanks to the GPU. 4K in some games is straight up brutal, so that's why I was just suggesting you look at readouts of your system.

I shall take a look , do you have a recommended util to run while gaming to measure performance of the cpu and gpu.

MSI Afterburner will plot GPU and CPU usage (on a per core basis for the CPU) that will give you an idea. I suspect one core will be pegged to near max usage, but similarly so will the GPU. If the GPU is pegged near 100%, then I would say that is your limit (which at 4k is usually the case @ 60hz).

Thank you , should I run the game windowed , so I can watch the graph , or does afterburner record its measurements so I can scroll through say the past 10 minutes of gaming time to check the performance ?
