Upgrading from a 7800GTX 256mb

My system spec is in the sig. I have a XFX 7800GTX 256mb card, and was thinking of upgrading... but to what?

Any suggestions? I hear that 7800GTX cards are thin on the ground, so perhaps a new card is the way to go, but not sure what to choose to fit in with the rest of my rig.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Depends on what res you game at to be honest.

With that setup you've got, I'd get a new cooler on the CPU, clock your 4000+ a bit and try and get another 7800GTX second hand for SLI, voila 6000-6500 3dmark06 score

Guess that idea would also depend on whether your PSU is "SLI ready" too

My PSU is an Enermax 600watt, and I'm sure it's SLI compliant. I have thought about getting another 7800GTX, but would the CPU not cause a bottleneck?

Also, I've found when looking at OCUk, and others, the 7800GTX is nowhere to be found. Do you have any suggestions where I might be able to pick one up?

Many thanks

Paul

Doesn't OCUK sell Enermax et al products?!?!?!?

What's good for the goose.... but point taken.

Yup, CPU would probably be a slight bottleneck IMO - however it would also be a bottleneck if you got a X1900, 7900, X1950 or 7950 card too....

Overclocking the CPU would give you a nice boost depending on the stepping of your processor you could probably get it to at least 2.7GHz with decent air cooling

But, if you game at 1280x1024 there are very few reasons to justify shelling out as your 7800GTX should be able to cope well with the majority of games on the market today (until Crysis anyway, or unless you're wanting more FPS in Oblivion)

Saying that, I recently went from:

Athlon 4000+
A8N32-SLI Deluxe
2GB Corsair 3500LL Pro
2 7800GTXs

to

Core2Duo 6400
2GB GeIL 6400
P5W DH Deluxe
HIS X1900 XT

and it hasn't really cost me a lot at all seeing as I got nearly £600 for my old Skt939 bits and bobs

Performance wise, the two systems are similar but with the improved CPU the new system is a lot more evenly balanced and future-proof

Interesting. In all honesty I am building up the nerve to do my first system build in the new year, at which time I might go the Conroe route. As a bit of a noob I'm feeling my way through the landscape at the moment, and trying to get a bit educated on the IT side of things.

I will have a look around for another 7800GTX, this might be a good mini project for me... I was walking around like Bill Gates recently as I sucessfully installed a second hard drive!!!!!!

Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Paul.

Anytime mate, building your own (whether it's sooner or later) is definitely the way forward - research as much as you can and most of your questions can be answered right here on OcUK.

Happy hunting :)
