Right lads, I'm looking to upgrade. Thinking about a 980 - is it a worthy upgrade. What about a 980ti or other alternatives?

Probably, for now will be sticking with 1080p, but looking to bump up to 1080p+ in future (with the same upgraded gpu).

I don't think 980 is worth it.

980ti is a good jump especially if you overclock
You may get a good deal second hand.

1070 is worth looking at as well but a bit more expensive.

Personally I'm doing ok at 1080p with my 970 and I'll keep it as long as I can.

970 to 980 is not a big jump and 1060 is better choice for dx12 than 980 but go for a 980ti if you can find one at around 300 new or 1070.

better to save up some more money as a 1060/980 is not a big jump in performance to a 970.

Upgrading to a 980 would be pretty pointless from a 970. 1070 would be the natural upgrade from a 970 and offer a very good bost in performance

At 1080p, unless you're consistently playing Witcher 3 and other triple-A titles and need fully maxxed AA/AF etc, then stick with the 970. I've got a 1440p Dell S2716DG and I'm looking towards getting a 1070, only because it's a lot harder to push the frames at this res, and it's a doubled effect as I've moved from 60 to 144hz :(

To support what pretty much everyone has said:

Unless you're willing to pay ~£350+ for a 1070 or can find a cheaper 980Ti second hand, I'd stick with the 970 for now.

Hmm thats not encouraging :( I was looking at getting that monitor as my ancient xl2410t needs upgrading to something made in this century it doesn't feel like I have had my 970 that long and it still utterly destroys stuff even the newer games I have played.

I'd get the monitor and then maybe turn down a few settings (the IQ will still look great), and see how things go from there. Monitor > GPU, at least as far as I'm concerned anyway. :)

No need to upgrade if you are at 1080p.

Only upgrade path is 980ti/1070 and that's really only if moving towards 1440p +.

Anything else is just a waste of cash.

I have a 970 myself and was toying with the idea of upgrading to a 1070/1080. But it would only be worth it if I also got a new monitor as I currently game at 1200p and the 970 maxes out 9/10 games at this res.

The longer you wait the better the technology you get to spend your money on.
