Hello all,

I'm looking into buying the 7850 as an upgrade from my old card. Just wanted some thoughts and advice on this and I have a few questions which I would be grateful for somebody to answer. I primarily use my computer for general browsing and gaming (heavy hitters like The Witcher, BF3 and Crysis are on my play list)

This is my current fps I get on Heaven with the 5770

How much fps am I looking to gain with the 7850?
Also am I going to be bottlenecked by my CPU at all? I was told not to overclock my CPU with my current motherboard as it had unstable VRM's. Motherboard is the MSI 890GXM-G65.

If I do get the 7850, which manufacturer shall I buy from? I have heard MSI and Sapphire are the best?

I currently run a dual monitor setup. Overclocking on my 5770 has not been great as I get a flicker on the second monitor whenever I adjust my clocks. So I have only experimented a small amount with overclocking. But I have read that the 7850 is great to overclock, but does anybody know why my flicker is caused or if it will be the same with the 7850?

Other specs if you would like to know:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1090T
Motherboard: MSI 890GXM-G65
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
HD: Hitachi HDS721010 1TB
SDD: Corsair Force 3 120GB (I brought and installed this myself a few months ago. I boot windows from it, and store my files on the HD)
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster P2450 24" (Second monitor is an LG 22" LCD)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Haven't opened up to look at my power supply but have read that the 7850 uses the same as the 5770 so I would assume just a simple swap would be easy? I can find out my PSU if anybody would like to know.

Thanks for any advice.

You'll at least double your fps :

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/538?vs=549

Plus more vram, which BF3 & Crysis 2 with the HD texture pack will love on max settings.

And as you said, the MSI & Sapphire are probably the best choices at the moment. Both have twin fan coolers which will help keep the heat & noise down if you decide to overclock the card.

Posting your psu's details wouldnt do any harm, especially if you plan on overclocking the card in the future.

Which you should consider doing at some point if you're comfortable with it because good 7850's can reach GTX 580 / 7950 performance. For free :)

If you OC the 7850 you'll triple that FPS.

Thanks for the information. It's just serving me to get excited over buying it :D however looking on the overclockers site (and also ******) all the Sapphire and MIS 7850's are out of stock! :( Anybody know when they're expected back in stock on here? Or could recommend another site to order from? Also is ASUS any good, because that has dual fans also.
Do you know when the MIS 7850 Power Edition IV is out at all? Because that looks pretty cool.

And just to ease my mind, the card wouldn't get bottlenecked by the CPU at all?

Oh and PSU is a 600watt gaming thingy.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Hi :)

Just a heads up:
From the FAQ said:
We, Overclockers UK (OcUK) are happy to provide the resources of these forums to responsible individuals without charge. They cost a substantial amount of money to maintain and use considerable amounts of bandwidth which is paid for exclusively by us. As you know OcUK are in the computer hardware business and therefore the promotion of OcUK's competitors is forbidden. Examples of promotion are :-
  • Posting links to competitors websites
  • Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
  • Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
  • Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
  • Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
  • Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
  • Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
  • Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
  • Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
  • Disguising attempts to do any of the above

If it were me, I'd just get this one:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-005-VX&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=411
Comes with a free game, in stock, bit cheaper, will still overclock well!

You'll be fine with your CPU.

PSU, sounds like a cheap rubbish one :p You'll soon see, people strongly recommend getting a decent PSU as it powers everything and a bad one can damage everything. Doesn't have to be expensive, this will run a 7850 with room for overclocking, its on offer and modular:

Hope that helps!

The HIS cards on pre-order are a good price (£185, due next week) with a custom cooler. The ASUS and MSI Power Ed are good choices as well, however when stock is coming in is anyones guess.

Have you got your 1090T OC'd? If not do so and it'll be fine. Those things will do 3.6GHz on stock volts usually, and around 4GHz with some extra volts.

Managed to order a MSI 7850 Twin Frozr III OC version for 200 quid which I'm picking up tomorrow. Small excitement :D Thanks very much for the help everybody.

As for the CPU, I'll have a look at overclocking it now. Any tips? Never done this before.

P.S What is a good program to monitor temp on the C/GPU?

Coretemp for CPUs, MSI Afterburner for GPUs.
