Hey everyone,

I currently have a Nikon D70, which as you can guess I've had for quite a while. I still like using it, but its a few years old now, and the girlfriend is not willing to make the jump from her bridge camera to it as it's too bulky and not 'aesthetically pleasing'! I think that means it needs a bigger lcd. With the length of ownership, it's use for both work and personal photos, it certainly doesn't owe me anything.

I have the 18-55 lens, and also the 55-200 f4, which I'd like to retain for the new camera.

There is a good camera shop near my place of work that usually gives a good deal, but for now I have only looked on MPB. The cameras to catch my eye, and be happily in budget, are the D3100, D5100 and D3200, noted in price order. Beyond looking around online reviews, I'm somewhat lost as to how these relate to what I currently have, and to one another.

In short, the requirements are:

Bigger LCD with live view.
SD rather than CF.
Not too big.
Cheap is good as I don't really feel the need to upgrade!

Thanks for your input.

James

Look for a used Nikon D7000, fantastic camera with great sensor and AF and lots of advanced features (dual card slots etc.). The D7000 is basically what the D70 has evolved into. The D7100 is the replacement to the D7000 but is new and you might not be able to stretch to that price, if you can then you are awarded with pro level Auto focus and some other extras like a 24MP sensor with even lower noise.

The other camera like D5100 are downgrades in terms of features and ergonomics, e.g. you will loose a control dial and programmable function buttons. They all have great sensors though.

Thanks both. I've discounted the 3100 as being a bit too low res on the screen. As that's probably the driving force behind the upgrade, it may as well be to a good one!

I've looked up the D7000, and while it does look good, it's around double the cost of the others I've looked at. That might have to be a more considered purchase through my business, where as I wouldn't overly miss the ~£200 toward the other two.

At the moment I am leaning toward the 5100, although the swivel screen puts me off a little. I'm not sure losing the second swivel dial would impact me too greatly, I don't seem to use it often at the moment, but are there any other big points I'd lose with this change?

Thanks.
