Upgrading from a duel 7800gt setup

Get the 640mb, 320mb is not going to be enough for newer games, so you'll be upgrading again very soon, or if you can hang on till the end of the month when the new 112sp 640mb GTS's come out, then id do that, and it would be a decent upgrade, a lot faster than 2x 7800 GTS's in SLi, even the 320mb GTS is, only thing lets that down is the memory.

Thanks for your help. I can't really afford the 640mb version though. Someone also suggested that this card wouldn't actually fit in my current PCI-E slot on my Asus A8N-SLi Premium nForce4 SLi due to there being a newer different kind of PCI-E. Is this the case?

You could always go Red and get a HD2900Pro, they can be found for circa £150 to £170, just use google product search. I think most will oc to HD2900XT levels too, and they all come with atleast 512mb of ram, which u need.

As your for motherboard, it will be fine for any PCI-E card out yet, as far as I know (PCI-E 2.0 is coming out soon though).

Yeah i forgot about that, 2900pro's are only £176, and are really just downclocked XT's, so once you get it clocked to XT speeds it will be about on par with the 640mb GTS, but quite a bit cheaper, and as said above has 512mb Ram, that would be the best option if the 640mb GTS is out of your price range. :)

If you sold your 2 cards, and you cpu, you could get the following (if supported by your motherboard):-

1) amd x2 5000+ BLACK Edition (It has an unlocked multiplier :D)
2) get the ati 2900pro and overclock if you really wanted

The only other thing to suggest is to sell your cpu + motherboard and get a c2d setup, with a cheap 2160 or 4300 (or whatever the best but cheapest overclock friendly C2D is nowadays :) ), and it wouldn't work out that expensive to do.

This combination would really allow you to get some potential outta yor system/gfx :)

I'm pretty sure nforce4 boards are S939 only. But to upgrade he's have to sell his entire system. For a cpu upgrade I'd see if he could get a cheap S939 X2, perhaps a opteron 165 or something, and oc it.

But deffo go for the HD2900Pro no matter what, I don't think your 4000+ cpu would bottleneck it THAT much (especially if it's overclocked).

The HD2900Pro's are going for £150 some places too :).

i have opty 165 @ 2.7ghz in my shuttle sn25p rock solid I used to have same motherboard as you and went from 3200 winchester [email protected] was a nice jump to opteron get one if you can and make S939 work little longer for you, maybe until we see what amd phenom looks like??
