Hi

Apparently im below recommended on my CPU but have met GPU requirements (GTX970). Are the CPUs out there enough of a leap to justify a total rebuild or is there a cheaper option? My mb is a 2012 Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard, so im thinking if its worth just redoing the lot and keeping the 970?

Just overclock the i5 to say 4.2 GHz (i just set the turbo to x42) and you'll overcome any deficit in the small core improvements from the newer processors. Otherwise it's still a very capable processor and when driving my 980 Ti it isn't that much behind in fps than my i7 5820K with the same card and same OC speed.

What I should have done was kept looking for a i7 3770K on ebay at a reasonable price and saved quite a lot more on the X99 upgrade.

In the same boat though I can get 4.4GHz without too much fuss. Keeping an eye to see how 3570Ks and 970/290s perform in VR.

you fine. remember games need to sell. so they need to cover as many areas as possible. your cpu gpu is more than capable.

vr wont be anything for 5 years yet.hype hype many many headsets to come many tears.

buy into vr when its properly available which is as above 5 plus years away.;)

keep what you've got... wait till some proper VR stuff is released and there's software to properly support it then decide....

for a good experience with VR a 970 is likely to be around the minimum recommended spec and may not give all that great an experience. We will need Pascal onwards to get a good experience with VR at a semi sane price....

for example

'The consumer model of the HTC Vive headset is said to sport a 2160x1200px display, which when split across two eyes equates to 1080x1200px for each eye'

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/new-prod...ease-date-pricing-rumours-plus-specs-3632772/

that's a hell of a lot of pixels to push for a 970 and its not going to be able to maintain anything like 90fps to match the refresh rate of 90hz in anything semi demanding
