can you tell me what is the best card from a 8800 gt to a 4870/gtx280 and any card in between to upgrade to if any with the following system-

asus a8n-sli premium mb
2gb of ddr ram
amd 4000+ single core cpu
hiper type-r series 580w psu
xp pro
raptor 74 gb hdd
19" ws monitor

the pc will be mainly used for gaming and i dont mind shelling out for a gtx 280 but i know my system will hold any of the cards back, so i really want to know which card you think i can have before i reach the limit of the system for gaming and how much of a increase in performance i can expect if any

cheers

:). i will probably get the 4850 as i have played the waiting game already unless i decide to build a new system

should have been x1900xtx and not gtx
cheers

it may well be, there have been reports of cards idling at 80'c, but if you have tidy cables and good airflow you should be okay, might have to turn the fan up using a mod, or get an aftermarket cooler...

If your able to shell out for a GTX280, you might as well get the HD4850 and then spend the rest of the money on either a second hand dual core CPU (skt 939 I presume) or go the full hog of getting a new mobo, ram & cpu.

I figure £120 for HD4850, leaving £120 for the rest (£240 is the cost of the GTX280)

£30 for 2 gig DDR2 ram
£50 for a P31 mobo
£50 for a E2180 Cpu.

Only a £10 over your budget.

Yeah just make a profile in the drivers to up the fan speed a bit as its to low on the default setting (think defaults about 23%), i upped mine to 36% and now ilding at about 55-57 from around 80 and still very quiet.
