ok so, cutting a short story even shorter, my 6870 died yesterday. I was quite happy with the performance it gave me, it was cooler and also my CPU temps dropped by about 5-8 C. (previously i was using an 8800gt)

I know amd are about to release something from their 6900 series this week, but i want to have something in mind now so that i can make a quick decision when it is released.

# Im looking at a budget of around £300-350 (although lower is better)
# I dont have preference of nvidia/amd (not caring about physx or eyefinity etc), one suggestion of each would be ideal
# I want it to exhaust air out of the back of the case, not releasing hot air back in.
# I dont want anything too good for my current setup (ie overkill/waste of money)

what do you suggest?

A GTX 570 and overclock it, or IMO wait until the 15th to see what the 6900 cards performance and pricing is like and then make a decision.

Why are you not RMA'ing it and getting another rather than wasting another £300+ on a gpu. You said yourself you were happy with it.

becasue the vendor doesnt have it in stock any more to replace so they said they will give me my money back, in which case i might like to use a bit of my Christmas bonus to upgrade

very good vendor to offer a full refund.

Might as well wait 3 days and see what the 69xx series bring to the table regarding price and performance either way the only upgrade options from the 6870 would be

5970
480
580
6970

whats res are you running and what sort of games u play

*edit*

just noticed you are on XP tbh i would spend some of the cash upgrading your os to win7 not much point having a top end dx11 gpu to cripple it with xp.

ah no, sorry it is win7 64bit now,

everything else is the same though

im worried about getting a gfx card with huge memory cause of the way windows reserves ram for it and i dont wana cripple my ram, or am i totally mis understanding how that works?

so far it seems gtx570 is in front
