Upgrading from CF 5750

Ok, So at the moment I have two ATI HD5750s Crossfired. The performance is pretty good, but I feel it could be a lot better. I have been looking on the OCs webiste, and have seen a few decent looking ATI cards around the £200-£250 region.

I will be selling the two 5750s, hoping I will get about £150 for the pair.

Basically, what I need, is a noticable upgrade from what I have in a single card solution. Would for example, the 2GB 6950 deliver a noticable performance increase. I game at 1920x1080. I play Shogun Total War 2 at high at that res, but I really want to max it out. It has to be an ATI, as my board is crossfire only and I want the future possibility of two cards.

Not that much of a performance boost unfortunately. The 57** cards scale remarkably well and 5750 cfx almost equates a 5850.

You'll probably want to go for a 6970 to get a more noticeable boost in performance (or unlock a 6950 to get a similar boost).

If you're struggling to play games at the moment, you'll see a good performance hike. Probably most noticable with Anti Aliasing, I don't see a 6970 having much trouble with anything at the moment.
 
My current setup can't MAX out things like Shogun 2, Crysis etc and play comfortably, but I can set everything to high and enjoy a comfortable frame rate. If you were in this position, would you make the change?

Personally, yeah! I love new stuff.

Although I'd advise you to save the money and buy something in 5 or 6 months time, or at least until I was struggling to play games with good settings.

But I also know that upgrade bug! Really, if you have the money then do it. You'll be happy :)

Just don't expect a HUGE performance jump.

What res do you play at?
 
I'm thinking I should upgrade sooner rather than later, while my two current cards can be sold for a reasonable price. So I'm thinking I'll take the plunge and go for the 6950 flashed to 6970. How stable is the 6970? I game at 1920x1080.
 
Ok, two 5850 in CF... or two 6790? Or is there a single card option for around 250 that will surpass either of these options?

The 5850 is a much faster card than the 6790 (have a look here), however if you are going for a crossfire setup then I would go for two HD 6850s - these are close to 5850 speed on their own and surpass it when in crossfire due to excellent scaling. Considering you can find HD 6850 cards for under £130 these days this will be only slightly over the £250 budget.
 
Ok, found 2 6850s for 260. Seems a good price. I have a 650 PSU, will that be sufficient? Will this setup blow away my current set up? Looking to order today :) thanks people.
 
Looking at this, a 650W corsair PSU will be plenty for two HD 6850s in crossfire.

As for performance upgrade, looking at this review 5750CF performs between single 5850 and 5870 performance levels at high resolutions (1920x1200). This chart shows is how the 6850CF setup compares to a single 5870 (so expect a performance increase at least this big).

If your set on crossfire, 6850's will blow away your current setup. The 6000 series scale very well.
A quality 650 watt PSU will be fine.

Wow, you got two 6870s for £260? Good job.

In that case, this chart shows how 6870CF compares to a HD 5870 (which is equivalent to a HD 5750CF at high resolution in the best case). As you can see, it is a really nice step up and this page still shows that a good quality 650W PSU will easily power your system with these graphics cards installed.
