I have given my DK2 to my stepdad so on the lookout for a decent upgrade. From what I can see, Oculus Rift S makes the most sense. I did look at the Quests but from what I can figure out it has its own selection of games.

I used to play ATS, ETS2, Hotdogs Horsehoes and Hand Grenades in VR, assuming I cannot with the Quest lineup? Also I heard the S has much less cables which is a great thing.

Have had the DK2 since pre order days and has served me well, but time to move on. Price is not too much of an issue. Around £300-350 or so.

Is the Vive still going or has that ceased? Really out of the loop with what VR headsets are available now.

Used to have the Rift S, great bit of kit. Played ETS with it for a bit. Played Skyrim VR, Falloout4 Vr and pretty much most VR games off Steam or GOG. it needs a cable, but only the one. Very easy to set up since no light houses, just plug in and set up the Oculus software. Needs light, but it has to get very dark before you`ll need to put the light on. Tracking is very, very good.

That was before FB Mandatory happened though, not sure what Software set-up will be like now.

Ah blast it.. well no rift for me, guess I'm on the look out for the Vive then.

Edit: I see the Samsung Odyysey, that could be a possible buy.

Vive and Samsung Odyssey are previous gen and showing their age now.

If you want a non-Facebook headset then you should look at the Valve Index or HP Reverb G2.

Doesn't really jive with this:

Only option for a modern headset in that budget is the Quest 2, with all that entails.... you have to be happy to use a facebook account too as mentioned.

I think for your budget the best non-facebook option would probably be an Odyssey+ if you can find one, or perhaps a used reverb G1v2 but both may be challenging. If you can push the boat out to a G2 then I agree with Ravenger that is one of the more interesting PCVR headsets out at the moment (well, shortly going to be out!). Index is great also of course but seriously, seriously out of your budget there.

Nobody in your family has a Facebook account?

If not, then you are really looking at buying second hand to stay within your price range.

The thing about second hand older headsets is that if they go wrong it can be almost impossible to get them fixed or get spare parts.

Also the experience with the old Vive headsets (with the wands) is not a patch on other headsets with better displays and controllers.

The older Windows Mixed Reality headsets have big tracking issues compared to modern headsets.

Unfortunately there's nothing out there that can remotely compare in specs at the price with the Quest 2. You can create a Facebook account with minimum info (no more than you would use for any other gaming account with a credit card attached for purchases) lock down all the privacy settings and only use it for Oculus. Your Oculus VR identity can be kept separate from your real identity, and has different friend lists.
