specs:

cpu: i3 2130
ram: 8gb
mobo: GA-H61MA-D3V
psu: 650w
os: windows 7 (64bit)
monitor: 2560 x 1440 (144hz) gsync

the monitor is overkill atm, as i am planning to get my newer pc built, and that monitor is meant to be for that.
tbh, i should prolong the life of this monitor and just plug in my older 1080 60hz jobby, as pushing my 660 to display some newer titles at 2560 x 1440 (even at 60hz) is too much!

i was looking at a gigabyte gt 1030 for £80, then i found out that it is actually slighly worse than the 660!

budget is for under £100.

i want to stick with nvidia.

can any of you out there give some feedback on whether this is a good step up?

a good step up pricewise and compatability-wise, basically.

For £100 there isn't a worthwhile upgrade from the 660.

Even for £150 from Nvidia a 1050Ti performs similarly to a GTX 670, so not a huge upgrade from your current card.

I know you said NVIDIA, but the best price/performance upgrade at the minute would be one of the AMD RX570's that are currently discounted this week:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £168.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

For a rough idea of how old/new cards compare

i know you want to stick to nvidia for obvious reasons, but as someone who upgraded from a gtx 660 the other week, my rx 570 is certainly a big improvement, not to mention going from an athlon 860k to a ryzen 1200 to help as well and i dont game at 1080p nevermind higher, so id say find out the nvidia equivalent and buy that, for £100 you are obviously looking at used and on that note before i purchased my card new i was looking at used cards and a lot of 970s popped up from £70 and even saw the odd 980 from £120, all 4gb models mind.

i had a twinfrozr 660 which i sold for £35, so could shout to sell then to add to your 100 budget.

Yep, I upgraded from a GTX 670 to RX580. I sold the EVGA 670 ftw Edition for 40, so I'm sure you could find a decent 9 series card for less than a ton

At 2560x1440 resolution you will only just get away with a 1060 or 580 card at medium to high settings. Anything lower would be poor fps. The 580 is slightly better but because you have gsync the 1060 would feel a lot smoother even at lower fps.

i will be swapping back to my older 1080 60hz tv until the new pc is built.
as mentioned before, 2560 atm seems like too much for a 660.
