Hey all and seasons greetings.

That time has rolled around where I have the itch to upgrade my i5 4670k. Looking at something in the i7 range but have been away from the scene for too long to know what is decent and what isn't. I mainly play Football Manager, League, CSGO etc etc. Budget sits at around £400-£500.

Thanks in advance.

Really little reason to upgrade for those games, a current gen i7 is going to put you out at least £350 leaving very little to pick up a motherboard, cooler and decent kit of DDR4.

GPU might be a better investment depending what you have or maybe even an SSD or two.

I agree - I don't see how you're going to get a coffee lake i7 on that budget, unless you already happen to have a compatible cooler and 16 GB of DDR4 lying around. I'd overclock the i5 and consider the GPU/SSD idea.

Already overclocked my i5 to the tune of ~4.2Ghz although it has been less stable as of late. Sitting on an RX480 so only thing to do is upgrade the SSD's. Do you think the tail end of next year may be a wiser time to upgrade the i5?

The CPU itself will eat most of your budget, let alone a Z series mobo and cartel priced DDR4. Looking at near 1080ti money for the upgrade, so you may aswell hold off and buy a 1080ti. i5 4670k is fine for gaming, and 4.2GHz is a really conservative clock speed. I have one that does 4.8GHz no sweat, and it's by no means a golden chip.

I may need to revisit my cooling system then as I can only push 4.2GHz with safe temps / safe voltage. I am by no means an overclocking expert but I know the basics. SSD and cooling system is on the wishlist then!
