Been thinking about treating myself to a new cpu and motherboard. Currently I am running a Gigabyte P55-US3L, Intel I5 750, 16Gb Hyper X Genesis 1600 DDR3, Radeon 280x etc.

Now, Im not after the 'latest and greatest', to be fair this old i5 does well at what the machine is used for but I fear its time to move on.
What I would like to do it to change the CPU and motherboard to something a little more current (either Intel or AMD, not fussed) but use the current ram if possible just to keep cost down.

What would peoples suggestions be to get a decent performance boost without breaking the bank ? Would like to keep it under the £200 if possible

Or you could just keep the mobo and try to get an i7 860 in there. Not sure how well they clock compared to the 750 (I assume you clocked up your 750 aye? They'll reach about 4GHz making them pretty decent still)

Alternately the sandybridge CPUs & boards should be pretty cheap second hand by now hopefully and they mostly clocked a treat. The 920 suggestion isn't bad, though if getting a 1366 mobo I'd probably look to stick a Xeon in it. Edit: link

£220 for a 4690k seems a waste of money.

Put the money aside, add a bit to it and wait for Skylake.

Going from a 750 to 4690k would be quite a huge improvement in certain situations, others not so much. Unless you are struggling in games/applications you are using just wait for Skylake.

Out of curiosity do you have a SSD?

Its not that I'm particularly in need of a new CPU, but would like the features of a newer motherboard etc.

I don't see the point though...
As stated, better off waiting for Skylake now, your not going to gain much anyway by getting another i5 that's almost eol.

OK, a quick search suggests the 4690k is 1.7 x better than your current i5 with single threaded tasks and 1.5 x better with multi threaded tasks.

How this actually compares in the real world - you will have to search for that yourself.

Do you have a SSD?

At 4ghz + your i5750 is still a solid cpu about the same performance as a stock 2500k.

If buying new 4690k / 4790k and Z97 board can use your existing memory in it without slowing it down.

Secondhand 2600k/2700k and board.

Op I'm like you and dont need the latest greatest CPU and I would advise you don't bother.

I went from a s1156 i7 875k @4.2ghz to a 4690k at 4.2ghz just last month and its truly one of the most underwhelming 'upgrades' I've ever done, if I had the option to send it all back I would in a heartbeat.

Don't know what I was expecting really but I haven't really noticed a big difference in games (770 SLI) photshop and lightroom don't seem any more responsive and while video encoding times may have reduced I don't sit waiting for it so haven't noticed any difference.

I currently have a I7 950 @ 4ghz and I am not planning on upgrading it anytime soon.

does me well in gaming which is what I do, GPU is holding my system back now which will be next to go!

I would keep what you currently have and just save the money.

what ress do you game at and do you have a ssd? SSD will not improve ftps but will make the system run better, smoother with better loading times of apps and games

either wait and see what skylake brings and go all out

or if on tight budget go for a cheap used z68/z77 and a 2600k or 3770k

theres not much of a performance leap from sandy to devils canyon tbh, just drip feeding the improvements

thae main things you'll notice coming from current setup is cooler cpu running/better overclocking and true sata3 and usb3 speeds

1156 CPUS seem to be dirt cheap at the moment (£35); I'd stick a i7 860, get it up to 3.8GHz and add a SSD (£40) if budget allows.

1155 i5 and i7 CPUs (£100) and the required z77 motherboards (£65) are oddly expensive; don't bother with these.

A basic 1150 motherboard is dirt cheap (£25). You could get a basic board and a non-k i5 or i7 (£not sure) reasonably cheaply, second hand.

TBH i'd go for the i7 860 and add an SSD.

Currently my 750 is running at 3.5 (166x21) @ 40 degrees idle under a H100. Not sure what I could push it to in terms of overclocking whilst waiting for an upgrade.

I only play games at 1080p and to be honest nothing is really struggling under the strain of modern games. I guess its a waiting game for me.

Only it's not going to be much of a boost is it.

H55 to Z97 is a massive leap.

USB3, SATA3, PCI-E 3.0

Not to mention Haswell power saving features, higher base clock and IPC gains....

Not sure what you're on about TBH unless you're just worried about your FPS in Counter Strike and nothing else.
