hello , i've been using one of the original 8800gts640mb cards for a while now and i've just gone from a 17" monitor using 1280x1024 resolution to a 22" monitor at 1680x1050 , is it worth upgrading to one of the more recent nvidia cards or sticking with what i've got , i mainly play cod 4 any advice ? :)

Do you find the game running at a frame rate you find unacceptable? Do you want to play at higher detail settings or with (more) AA? If not, don't bother. If so, I'd consider maybe a 3870X2 or an 8800GTX :)

don't really see the need. It's about on par with the current midrange (3870/9600GT). Like Guru, i'd imagine CoD4 runs well... certainly well enough to not warrant an upgrade. What res are you at?

^ he said he's going to 1680x1050 on a 22''...

Anyway yeah I'd try out CoD4 on your new setup and see how you like it first. I had a 8800GTS 640mb awhile ago before CoD4 was released...but think it would handle it pretty well. I also had a 8800GTS 512mb and it ran CoD4 very well also @ 1680x1050 4xAA 16xAF...it got a bit slow when there was lots of smoke on the screen...but so far every nvidia card I have used has done that in CoD4 (must just be something about the nvidia architecture that doesnt like that smoke)

If you were to upgrade I would grab a 3870x2 or 9800GX2....the 8800GTS 512mb is a nice jump but not large enough to warrant the upgrade IMHO.

GTS 512 should be a good 25-33% or so faster than a GTS 640.

25% more shaders, 30% higher core clockspeed, and considerably higher shader clock.

However....... if CoD4 runs well at your new resolution then there is no need to upgrade. So on that regard, if true, I'd just wait till the new cards from ATI and Nvidia appear.

I'm running a 640Mb 8800GTS on a 22" monitor at 1680x1050 full eye candy with no problems on CoD, some other games I do get a little slowdown though but it's always been playable with decent settings at that resolution. :D

As others have said, if your only playing COD4 then there really isn't a need to upgrade.

I am currently running an 8800GTS 320Mb BFG card on a 2001wfp at 1680x1050. COD4 runs very smoothly with everything on high at that resolution.

IMO, you just answered your own question. If your favourite game plays well, with no slow down, and max settings, you'll get exactly the same thing no matter what card you upgrade to. Just save the cash, and wait for something that you like but punishes your system to come out before upgrading. after all, there's always something better around the corner.

Upgraded from a Superclocked 320mb to a 512 GTS...Was a brillaint buy.

Can play Crysis nicely and everything else brilliantly. Well worth it.
