I want to buy a new graphics card and as the title suggests my current one is an r9 270x(sapphire). im looking for something that would run any demanding game on ultra and do it smoothly, looked at the 295s but there out of my price range :(

im guessing that a 290x would do it but, would I need a new cpu to handle the extra power? would I also need to buy a new psu, my current is a superflower 450w 80+

cpu is a core i5 @ 3.9

First thing you will want to do here is bite the bullet and wait for the upcoming Nvidia and AMD GPU releases. Both will reduce the prices of existing GPUs and in the case of the AMD rebrands, you may get an 'updated' version of the 290x, with extra memory and other features.

Wouldn't worry too much about your CPU. Games are increasingly taking advantage of 8 logical cores (you only have 4) but I think for the time being, it is a case of six and half a dozen.

Your PSU would definitely be an issue with a 290X, but should you opt for a GTX 970 or 980 (they might come down into price and within your budget in the following week), you might just get away with a 450W PSU.

Wait a couple of weeks for AMD's new cards.

I would have to wait a couple of weeks anyway because of how im payed, be a bonus too if they do drop in price by a decent amount.
