Upgrading GPU from MSI 1660xs

My nephew is new to PC gaming and is currently using a MSI INFINITE S i5 9th gen. Msi gtx1660 venous xs GPU. 16gb Ram.
He wants to upgrade to a RTX 2060 ventus xs GPU. Is this upgrade worthwhile or not? If not what upgrade would this system allow? Thanks

No, unless you can get one for a cheap price used or at a low retail price. Below is the up to date equivalent, but it is out of stock everywhere and costs a whopping £449,49.

Thanks for the reply. I am not really understanding these GPU model numbers, i think he was under the impression that the higher number i.e 2060 meant better performance ? but reading a few comparisons of the two cards there doesn’t seem to be much in it. Would any card improve this system greatly and if so which one. It has a 500w flex gold psu in the system. Thanks

The 2060 is two years old (2018), an older less effective design. The 3060 Ti is a newer version from NVIDIA and around 20 percent slower than the next fastest RTX 3070.

So you had the, NVIDIA GTX 960, GTX 1060, RTX 2060 and the latest model the RTX 3060 Ti, the normal 3060 model is not out until next month. RTX 3060 Ti was released last month in 2020. Look on YouTube for a review.
 
I dont think that there is enough hierarchy in the cards between the one he has and the one he wants to upgrade to.
1660 next (more powerful Nvidia) card is probably a 1070Ti, then you hit the 2060 quickly.

For the money it would cost it is not worthwhile. Does he have any issues with gaming with the current card, or is it a want. Not a good time in the market for GPUs (or anything else)
 
Thanks for the reply’s. The only gaming issues he is having is he is playing a game called FiveM with some of his friends and is having real issues with the fps and rendering of the graphics on his monitor, which is a lg ultra gear newish monitor not sure which model. The internet connection is wired Virgin media 500mb wired straight into the router with cat 8 cable. He reckons his mates are not having the same problems with pretty similar setups and slower internet? Maybe he has a setting wrong but he says it plays Fortnite fine on pretty high fps

That's a MOD of GTA V, MOD's take up memory, the more MOD's the more VRAM/RAM demanded by the PC. So, its either a VRAM bottleneck or consider upgrading the RAM on PC.

Getting RAM to 32 Gig would be cheaper than a new graphics card by some margin. Also what is the game saved on, an SSD is good, a mechanical hard drive will be slow. It is not always the graphics card.
 
Thank you for the reply’s. The 16gb ram is on one unit so will put another one in the other slot and tell him to run it from the ssd instead of the hdd. He is going to sit it out until next November when it’s birthday and hope for a new system in a full size case custom built. Thanks again for the help. Hopefully he’s learned a bit by then lol.
 
Just a quick question if anyone can help. I am now looking to upgrade this system to help performance of the games mentioned earlier in this post. So i am going to upgrade the RAM and install another ssd hopefully a m2 type. I think the one already in is either 256 or 512gb, but am hoping their is another free slot to install a 1tb m2 type to run the games from. If anyone is familiar with the internals of the MSI INFINITE S i5 9th gen. i have removed the case and there is some type of small slot on the top just beneath the case, any ideas what this is used for? Is it for pci m2? The RAM is easy to locate and exchange. Sorry if i sound useless, but new to this.

Just use a standard ssd you wont notice anydiffrence between that and a m2 drive.
 
Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know what the slot on the top of the pc is for?
It is just underneath the casing in the middle on top directly above the motherboard. It looks about the same width as a m2 ssd card? Sorry i haven't got a photo as i’m at work at the moment. The pc is one of the very small sized ones if this makes a difference. Cheers
