Upgrading graphics, is it worth it?

Hey guys,

I'm struggling more and more with games on 2560x1440 with my GTX 680 2GB

With my current setup (i7 920 @ 4Ghz), would it be worth it to upgrade to say a GTX 980 (ti) / Titan X or AMD 290X for the resolution I play at or will my system be holding it back too much? If it is worth it I can hold off getting an entirely new PC.

Alternatively I would be saving up till Christmas and getting a completely new rig with probably a GTX 980 (TI).

Definitely worth it, the 920 is still a fine cpu though if you were considering SLI'ing at some point I'd recommend a new CPU and MB. Depends on your financial situation. A new rig would be the way to go if you can afford it.

Thanks for the reply. I can afford it but I'd rather do it in steps. You know get a graphics card, later get a CPU+RAM+MOBO and later another SSD.

But the CPU won't be holding the graphics cards capabilities back to much then?

Yeah as I noted it's at 4Ghz :)
Basically the system still feels very fast. It's just in the newer games mostly it's starting to struggle with min. frame rate

the 680s vram at that res will be causing issues on newer games, if you get a 980ti or 970 DX12 should help cpu bound titles in the future!

At that res, I would have thought jumping to a 4GB card (rather than 2GB) would certainly help

Okay I think I'm going to wait for the 980 ti!

Or maybe get really drunk and order a Titan X on Friday ;)

Yeah it's probably a good thing to do that. I was a bit tight on money back then and people said not to bother... ;)

That looks pretty cool ALXAndy, although there is none atm. I'll keep my eye on the MM! :) Good tip.

There are higher end models too dude so do a bit of research :)

It's quite a big upgrade, you're talking pretty much 980x performance.

Yeah I know man, I've looked it up but there are none in the MM right now, that's what I'm saying.

I'll keep an eye on them. I've done an offer on a dutch tweaking site.. I'll see what happens.

Oh you're in the Netherlands. Sorry man, figured you were in the UK ! there is a ton of them on the UK auction site, I guess servers are being broken down and sold in parts.

Good luck mate, hope you find one. They're epic CPUs :)

Little update: Just bought a X5670 ! :)

Now we'll see if I'll be drunk enough Friday to push the buy button on a Titan X :D

Thanks for your help so far :)

That does sound tempting Kaapstad. Happy I can still resist myself.

I like the look of the GTX980 Ti but I'm not sure I want to wait that long. I do not want SLI/Crossfire so with one card it's probably not going to be GTX970/980/290X but rather the GTX 980 Ti / Titan X route I guess?
