Hi all,
got my lad one of the new black 360's, but it only has a 4gb hdd, which is about as much use as fishnet johhny.
How esy is it to replace the hdd with a bigger one?
And does it have to be a specific make/model?

Alternatively, could i use an external usb hdd and put all saved games onto that?

Of the two options i'd Ideally replace the hdd for a bigger one, so advice on that would be appreciated.

btw...i got the 360 as a gift and all i need cough up for is the hdd, so no point is posts saying "shoulda got the 250gb version" etc ;)

Thanks for any advice.

Get one of the old 360 HDD's and dismantle the outer casing, youtube for vids :)

Inside its just a normal laptop HDD with some custom stuff running on it.

Just cut down the foam which the 360 came with in its packaging, double sided tape (Strong stuff) to the HDD so it doesnt move in its casing and drop it in.
Job done.

You can buy Western Digital BEVS or some such and then flash them to work. The method is probably frowned upon here, but if you google it then there will be guides telling you which models work and how to do it.

Or use Alpherahs method and it will work right away.

I think they are releasing hdds for the slim. Might be worth trying to find a rough date and price before you do anything.

It's a bit stupid really that the hard drives are taking so long to come to market. I'd really like one of the new 4gb ones because I prefer the matt finish to the gloss. When they get the hard drives out I will be able to get one.

The hard drives are out at certain etailers/retailers. You can use an external hard drive but the 360 limits this to 16gb. I tried a 160gb drive and it formatted it down to 16gb.
Other ways are mentioned above, your choice.

You can now get the Official Xbox 360 250GB HDD for 79.99 from a well known GAME site....
Hope that subtle hint helps :P

Awesome I was in town yesterday and didn't see any. I will get one and the 4gb :)

Is it the same method to transfer the data across?

Yeah its the same method of data transfer, either using a usb stick to do it a bit at a time or using the drive transfer option I picked up a 2nd hand 120GB drive for around £30 in a high street store and just dismantled it dropped it in and away it went.

are you sure its the right 250gb drive?
the elite/premium hdd is different and wont fit the new 4gb or 250gb xbox 360 s. double check before you buy to make sure. i know you could open up the old 250 and modify it to fit.

If you take the hard drive out of the old enclosure, the drive will slot in to the new slim models. Only thing is the slot is slightly bigger than the small sata hard drive so you will need to find a way of supporting it.

The foam that the xbox is supported in the box works perfect for this...:D:D

If I were to buy the 4gb slim and put my 120GB drive in (from my broken Elite) would there be any chance of being banned from Live or having my warranty void?

To be honest, I don't know. Would it be seen as modding? Would they be able to detect the drive came from an Elite?
