upgrading mac pro gfx card to 8800 GT 512mb

It needs to be flashed with Mac firmware, so buy it from Apple.

I don't know if you can do it yourself, but it wouldn't be easy.

You can flash them yourself, however you take a BIG risk.

I've also seen people flash the 8800GTS with the 8800GT firmware, with some good results, I wouldn't try it though..

Where did you see the GTS flash working well? As the chap who did it on Macrumors has retracted his working well statement from the last I read as I don't work under boot camp, hence is pretty useless.

The 8800GTs on the other hand have been rather succesful and that thread lists the models to go for or at least the ones people have had success with.

If I hadn't got the 8800GT out the box from apple I'd be going down the flashing a PC one path.

Wouldn't have 2 cards affect boot issues?

Just asking because I may get a high-end PC card, and just stick with the 8800GT for OS X

Not really a problem from a booting point of view or at least from everything I've read it more a problem with say a 3870x2 not be initialised by OSX so running its fans flat out all the time in OSX. But then it works ok in boot camp.

I've got a 8800GTX sat here, may stick it in and see what happens, worst case, I take it back out again.

That'd be great if you could, it may sway my decision to get a high-end card for the future :)

Apple should at least support the high end GPUs in some way.

I'm tired of their lackluster approach to high end graphics, even in their highest of high end hardware.

How long has the GTX been out for and not a sign of it in the Mac Pro. Just baffling.

It'll no doubt be added to the Mac Pro when the next generation of cards are out. Whoopee.

Tell me about it!

To be fair I'm not waiting another 6 months to see it arrive in the Mac Pro.

Perhaps a letter to Steve is in order..

I would say he has been sent many letters/emails on the matter.

I really don't understand it. How many people don't switch over to Mac because of the weak graphics options. If Apple got their finger out their market-share would go up quite significantly.

Ah, I've been here before saying the same things.
