Upgrading macbook hard drive.

My macbook only has a piddley 80GB hard drive and im down to my last 2GB of space.

So my plan is to purchase an external drive but also boost the internal drive too as i need to run windows (for work) and bootcamp only supports internal drives. (or did last time i checked)

Anyway would this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...5400RPM SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (ST9250827AS) be ok or do the macbooks need a specific type.

That's fine. You can use any 2.5" SATA drive apart from the few with non-standard heights that physically wouldn't fit.

It's easy peasy, the hard drive just slots out the same way the ram does. There are plenty of guides about, but have a search on the apple support site first (their official instructions are often better written than third-party guides).

Just be careful not to damage the rubber mounts on either side of the drive as these are in place to absorb any shock etc. Removing these may void the warranty and result in the drive short circuiting and then damaging the rest of your Mac!

And what would be the 'best' method of transferring the data/apps/settings off the old drive onto the new drive?

You need a torq screwdriver (T5 or T6?) to remove the HDD from the caddy. Apart from that it is utterly trivial.

I used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up and restore,

But how do you get the data off a mbp on to the replacement drive unit, assuming you have circa 80+gb to transfer?

You could buy a cheap USB enclosure, put the new drive in it temporarily, and clone your data on to it.

Presumably when copying your initial drive, a bootcamp parition/data won't be transferred over?
