I have a '09 Unibody 13" MBP 2.26, since getting it, I've already upgraded the ram to 4GB, but I'm still not quite happy with performance.

It's either:

~£250 on a 160GB Intel X25 SSD, plus the possibility of running low on space, resulting in another £100 for an extra hd.

or

£90 for a 500GB, 7200RPM Momentus, and probably never use all the space.

Given the price difference, is the SSD really worth it?

I'd be happy spending the money on the HD if it gave me a performance boost, but the SSD would be a stretch, and potentially cost me more later on.

i think you have answered your own question there as it sounds like to would rather go with the 500Gb drive which i think i would chose over the SSD, £160 is a lot of money just for a little speed boost.

I'd take the SSD every time, but only you can judge how much value the additional performance is worth. 7200 drive over a 5400 isn't a huge boost in real life, it's a little but if you're unhappy with general performance it likely won't make much difference.

Well half of either will be made up by work, so the a 160GB X25 would cost me £125, a 500GB mechanical would cost me £45.

I assume a 160GB X.25 Is the drive of choice for the sake of £250? Is the G1 still worth having?

I've just put a 160GB G2 in my macbook pro, it really flies now. There's an argument the Crucial M225 might be quicker still but the intel works for me...
