Hi, I need to do a long overdue upgrade of my system. I am way out of touch with current tech - the last build I did must have been easily 10+ years ago. It's going to be used mostly by my son for light gaming - Ive got a RX580 8GB gpu which I put in last year and a decent PSU in there already. Anyway I have been doing a little bit of research but could do with some help.

I am looking at spending ~£600 on a new Motherboard, CPU and SSD
this is what I was thinking of:

AMD 5600X - £259.99

WD Black 1TB SN850 SSD - £169.99

When it comes to the motherboards I get confused. I first was looking at the MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX II because it had great reviews and was so cheap, but then looked towards the b550 chipset boards as they supported gen 4 SSDs. BUT THEN i see the x570 gaming edge wifi board is a similar price to the b550 model. It looks to me to be a no-brainer and go for the x570 or am I missing something?

These were the 3 boards I was considering:

£139.99

£159.95 (OOS)

£169.99

I have a few sticks of ddr4 RAM stashed away that will tide me over for now but could you suggest a 32gb RAM configuration that would compliment this setup as a future upgrade.

Thanks in advance

Except for Tomahawk all lower half of MSI's X570 boards have crap for money CPU VRM copypasted from £100 B450 boards.
After being B450 hero MSI simply planned to ride on that reputation in X570 boards.

Though 5600X is very frugal CPU and better VRM would be more needed if you later upgrade CPU to higher one.

And that higher up CPU would be also needed to really benefit from 32GB of memory.

Seems like a B560/11400F would be a better fit then put the money saved towards a better GPU once prices return to Earth.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £365.43 (includes shipping: £10.50)

Agree with this. The £100 difference between an 11400f and a 5600x will really help with graphics down the line. With your rx580 there will be 0 difference between them in games as everything will be GPU bound anyway

Yeah the 2 CPUs are pretty much equal when using a GPU up to an RTX 3070 @1080p and at 1440P~4K they will trade blows even with a 3090.
