So I've found my currently system increasingly sluggish with some workflows and have decided it's time to upgrade. My main purposes for the build are photo editing, video editing and gaming.

Programmes I use frequently are things like
Photography:
Affinity Photo with 2GB+ files regularly
Fooocus AI image generator
Darktable
PTGui

Video:
Davinci Resolve - plan to get the pro version so can edit in 4K

Gaming like flight simulator and few other racing games like AMS2 Assetto Corsa etc. At some point I may want to try VR.

I've decided to up my budget from my previous post, I plan to source a second hand Nvidia 3090 as it'll be in my budget. I understand it's the Nvidia route that'll best suit my needs for things like Fooocus/video timelines etc

Here's what I plan to put together, I just want to make sure it's all sensible and compatible. Happy to go with a cheaper cooler and any other suggestions. I plan to do a clean install and use my current case (Antec 1100), PSU & monitor. I plan to do the OS install in the pcie 4.0 drive and have my projects on the pcie 5 drive.

Current system specs are:
Asus Z77 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155
16GB Ram Kingston 1600mhz
Asus GTX 970
XFX 850 Black edition PSU
Dell U2711 Monitor 2560 x 1440

Thanks!

You will gain little benefit using a pcie5 m2 unless the programmes you use can utilise the speed. CPU cooler the Thermalright range are solid options for the money. Cheaper options

You could probably get a 9900x3d or even a 9959x3d if you shop wiser.

Would strongly advise a new PSU especially if it's 12 years old.

My basket at OcUK:

Intel alternative to the 9900X, I included a case and PSU if you're interested. Go with the peerless assassin suggested above if not.

These cards are still in high demand. You might want to wait for the Super versions of the 50 series, since something like the 5070 Super (18GB of VRAM) or 5070 Ti Super (24GB) may suit and you'd get the full warranty.

Thanks both for the suggestions, I think I'll definitely be going for the Thermalright cooler and made a saving on the M2 SSD. I think I'll be going for the AMD route this time, and now just a case of deciding which processor. Contemplating the 9950x with the savings made.

Your welcome.

The x3d variants are better for gaming but tend to a little slower in productive , take a look at reviews before you decide.

A 9950X under full multithreaded load would be pushing a peerless assassin. Doable, but new builders coming from old Intel systems tend to freak out about the high temps.

Thanks, truthfully I'd probably not be gaming as much as photo and video editing and would probably favour productivity over ultimate gaming performance. I'm a very light gamer at best and with exception of MSFS, the titles I play are probably not as demanding as some of the latest games.

The super versions of the 50 series could be tempting, though it'll just be if I've got enough patience to hold out, but that is appealing.

I see there's a 140 version of the Thermalright Assassin, gains look negligible, are there any other air-cooled alternatives you'd recommend? My only failure in the last build was an all-in-one Corsair cooler.
