Hi,

I currently have a AMD Phenom II x2 550 3.10ghz.

THe following motherboard-
Gigabyte GA-MA790x-UD3P

What CPU's can this Motherboard take that are a worth while and cheap grade just to get a little bit more UMPH!

Is it worth getting a Phenom II x4?

Your advise is much apprechiated.

Cheers

I also have Overdrive x2 ATI 4890's.

Is it time to upgrade these to something else? What would you suggest... IM not after hte top range graphics card at £300 pounds.. just something better than the 2 cards above.

As Infernox says, you could well unlock 2 extra cores with your motherboards BIOS with the 'ACC' option, just change the setting to auto and run CPU-Z to see if it's worked. It may fail to boot into Windows though meaning one or more of the cores are faulty, but if your motherboard has the option you may aswell try it.

As for graphics cards the only thing you can gain from an upgrade is DX11, but for £150 I doubt you're going to get anything much faster if at all faster than crossfire 4890's.

this.

Only thing that migh be worth doing is selling the 2 cards and maybe getting a 6950 or a 580 depending on how much you get for them, but not sure that would even be worth it tbh.

unlock more cores? From where.. huh?

I dont seem to be able to even run Rift in MAX, got all latest drivers and so forth.

Boot your computer, press delete, enter the BIOS, have a look around for ACC option, select 'auto' or 'on' to make it work.

Reboot your computer and see if it's stable, and you may have fully working quad core. All Phenom II dual cores are quad core Deneb based processors with 2 cores disabled, sometimes because they don't work sometimes just to make up the numbers of lower spec CPUs such as the Phenom II 550.

Rift has a bad engine, nothing to do with current gear, i couldnt max it.

Unlocking the cores is your best bet, if it dont work, drop your nb to 1600 and raise your cpu v by 0.1

Ok so if I unlock more cores, what does this mean? Double the CPU power for free? Do I need to upgrade bios I dunno if I have a acc option??? Do most games now support 4 cores???

Found ACC -
it had Disabled, AUto, ALL CORES and.. forgot otehr option.

I did auto, but nothing seesmt o change
Dirext x still says 2 cores, my computer infor says DUEL CORE...

How do I know if its Quad?

Yes, if both the other cores unlock you will have converted your X2 to an X4.
Alternatively you may be able to unlock one of the two cores giving you an X3.

Possibly, I had to get a different BIOS to see the ACC options on my mobo.
Check you motherboard manual first.

Some do, especially if they are a console port like Battlefield Bad Company 2.
