Upgrading my cpu

This month i will be upgrading my processor, but i'm not sure which to get, i have read a few threads on here about the hex core chip, but i'm thinking of going with a quad.

I'm new to the computer building etc, so sorry if i sound stupid. Why is the voltage different on the chips? and what advantage do you have but having a more voltage?

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 840 "95W Edition" 3.20GHz

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 970 Black Edition "140W Edition" 3.50GHz

HazKirby - yes i was on about the wattage. Was just wondering what the advantage / dis-advantages were. Cheers.

Dea924 - Mainly use it for Picture editing and gaming really. Think i will stick with the 955, think its a good choice. Was thinking of Hex core but don't think i will use it.
