Ok, so got my free Acer laptop from CPW yesterday.

Acer Aspire 5315
Cleron M 550 2ghz
1Gb DDR2
X3100 GFX

and so on

basically i wanted to upgrade it, its cost me nowt so dont mind spending a small amount upgrading it.

Im going to increase to memory to 2Gb, im assuming the 2x1gb 200 pin kits that ocuk sell are the correct type, im also assuming that i currently have 2x512mb modules installed.

Id also like to up the cpu to something like a pentium dual core or a core 2 duo, this is where im stuck as i dont know which one to get, dont want to spend a mass on it.

Is it a simple enough job to change the chip?

Cheers

Memory should be accessable via a panel on the back, open it up and take a look at what is in there currently, alternatively scan it at one of the major memory suppliers online which will give you full detail including what your laptop can take.

CPU is another matter, in my experience they are rarely easily accessable and can be a can of worms to upgrade.

Well according to cpu-z i have a single 1Gb stick of PC5300 so i should be able to add another 1gb stick to make 2gb.

The cpu is socket 479 and this model of laptop has the option of the T2310 or T2330 cpu so need to see how easy it is to change this.

There are two Socket P C2Ds that seem to be consistently working with the GL960, though they are not officially supported:

Core 2 Duo T5250 1500 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5450 1667 2048 667

These are the only Socket P C2Ds with a 667MHz FSB. I have not heard of anyone even attempting to use an 800MHz Socket P C2D on the GL960.

The Socket P Pentium Dual-Cores, while not officially supported, is being shipped with many GL960 machines by default. Powerpack suggested that Intel simply hasn't updated their documents and that the GL960 does officially support the PDC:

Pentium Dual-Core T2310 1466 1024 533
Pentium Dual-Core T2330 1600 1024 533
Pentium Dual-Core T2370 1733 1024 533

And of course, there are the Socket P Celeron Ms:

Celeron M 530 1733 1024 533
Celeron M 540 1866 1024 533
Celeron M 550 2000 1024 533
Celeron M 560 2133 1024 533
