I currently have an AMD FX 4100 processor, and 8GB of RAM. What power supply would you recommend if I were to upgrade my GPU to a GTX 660? I currently have a generic 500 watt psu that came with the case, would that be enough?

Many generic 500w PSUs only provide ~330w of 12v power. You'd never want to run such a cheap PSU near that, so 250w would be its max safe usage. This is roughly what your proposed system needs while gaming. So while technically you can run a gtx660, it would be wise to upgrade. Any decent brand with 350watts@12v and above will be sufficient.

Would it hurt to plug it in for a short time before getting a new PSU? just run for a short time on the generic one?
